The Wedding He Heard About Afterwards

This message is for the man who learned of his own sister wedding from a group photo, and who has finally stopped rehearsing what he would have said if he had been asked

For twenty-two years Julian had a speech.

He never wrote it down. He kept it in the truck, which is to say he kept it in the twelve minutes between the freeway exit and the job site, and he would run it while the light was red at the bottom of the ramp. It changed over the years. In his twenties it was sharper. By his forties most of the edges had come off it and what was left was mostly just warm, three or four sentences about his sister and one about their mother, the kind of thing a brother stands up and says with a glass in his hand while the room goes quiet and looks at him.

He rehearsed it before every family thing. Before the baptisms he was told about afterward, before the anniversary lunch the year they forgot to send him the time, before both funerals. He would get in the truck and rehearse it. It was not delusion. He knew perfectly well how it stood between them and had stood since he was twenty-four. It was more like keeping a coat by the door in a town where it hardly ever rains.

His sister was married in April. He found out in June, from a group photograph on a feed, forty people on a lawn, and he sat with his thumb on the screen for a while in the parking lot outside the supply yard with the engine running.

And here is the thing. The photo was not what got him. He is honest enough to say that the photo was almost expected, and expected things do not knock a man over.

What got him was that he did not reach for the speech.

He sat there and waited for it to come up out of him the way it had come up a hundred times, and it did not come. There was nothing in the truck. Somewhere in the last few years, without any decision and without any ceremony, he had stopped rehearsing, and he had not noticed the day it happened, and there had been no funeral for it. He put the phone face down on the seat and pulled out into traffic and got two streets before he had to pull over again.

You know that quiet. Maybe you had a speech too, or a letter you drafted a hundred times, or an answer ready for a question nobody ever got around to asking you. And it went. And you would call that acceptance, and part of it truly is, and part of it is a room in you where the light got turned off because nobody was using it. But hear me before we go one step further, because this is what you have not been told. You are wanted by God on purpose, and He moved toward you in the years when you had quit rehearsing anything. Romans 8:15 says you have received the Spirit of adoption, and it is the Spirit Himself who has been keeping a cry alive in a man who had run out of words for it.

The Spirit does the asking a man has quit doing

Let me be careful here, and slow, because the thing that happened in that truck is holier than it looks and nobody has treated it as anything.

When the rehearsing stops, a man calls it maturity. Sometimes it is. But sometimes what actually stopped is the asking, and the asking is the last live wire in a person. It is the part of you that still expects to be included somewhere, and when it goes quiet the whole system reads as stable and nobody, including you, comes to check on it.

Now hear what the word says about who is doing the asking when you have stopped.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.Romans 8:15

Look at who is doing the crying in that sentence. Not the man on his best day. The Spirit given to him. Galatians 4:6 says God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts crying Abba, Father, which means the cry originates on God's side and is placed in you, so that when your own voice for it has worn out entirely there is still a cry going up out of your life that you did not manufacture and cannot exhaust.

You have the Spirit of adoption in you, and He has been crying Abba out of a man who ran dry years ago. Romans 8:15 says it in exactly those terms, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for you to feel it before He does it.

He wanted you, and He did it deliberately

Now the word that gives this category its name, because everything turns on it.

Adoption is not an accident and it is not a rescue of convenience. Nobody is adopted by drifting into a household. It is the most deliberate thing a family can do: a decision, a document, a name transferred on purpose. Ephesians 1:5 says He predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will. According to His good pleasure. Not according to need, not according to a shortage, not according to how the arrangement suited Him. He wanted to.

And the order in that verse is the part your whole life has been arguing with. The wanting came before you. Before the twenty-two years, before the speech, before the parking lot. Nothing about you produced it and nothing about you is sustaining it, which is exactly why the years of silence did not wear it down.

You were wanted by a decision God made before you had one thing to bring to it. His word settled that in Ephesians 1:5, and His Spirit is what makes a sentence about eternity land in a truck at a red light.

I am not going to tell you what to do about your sister. Not one word of that is my business or this article's. Nobody here is going to put a phone call on your schedule, or hand you a deadline for forgiving anybody, or hint that things will turn around at Christmas. I do not know, and I will not pretend to. What I know is where you stand with God, and that has been settled for a long time, and it does not run through that lawn.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it asks nothing of anybody on that lawn.

You stopped rehearsing because you concluded that nobody was going to ask. And in the room you were looking at, that conclusion was reasonable. But you drew it about the wrong room. There is a household where the asking was done first, before you were in any condition to be asked about, and where the paperwork, if you want to call it that, was signed on God's side and has been sitting complete ever since.

It is already settled, and there is no application of yours still open anywhere in heaven. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and the Spirit does not testify to something He is still hoping will come through.

The coat by the door was not foolish. Keep it or do not keep it. But the house you belong to is not the one you were watching the weather for.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Photo I saw two months late, you do not set my standing. Romans 8:15 says I have received the Spirit of adoption who cries Abba, Father, and God moved to take me in before I had one thing to bring. I am wanted and He wanted me first.
  2. Fear that I am unwanted, you do not get to name my house. In the name of Jesus God moved toward me on purpose and called me His own, and He did it in the years when I had stopped rehearsing anything. I am wanted by God and I am His.
  3. Father, You took me in on purpose and You are the One who taught my mouth to say Abba, and I am saying it tonight. Your word calls me Your child and an heir, and I go through this evening as one. I am wanted, and Your wanting came first.
