Everyone, in the Office Kitchen

This message is for the man in the office kitchen at somebody else's farewell party, who organized the collection and passed the card and is in fourteen group chats and nobody's emergency contact, reading a thank you message that names six people and then says and everyone, and knowing which word he is

The card has been round the whole floor twice because he made sure it had, and it is in his inside pocket now with the envelope from the collection, and there is a cake on the counter that says a name that is not his.

That is fine. It is Priya's farewell party and it is a good one, twenty people in a kitchen built for six, someone's phone playing music off a shelf, the good mugs out. He organized it. He organizes most of it. He is the one who remembers birthdays and buys the card and chases the eight people who have not signed, and he does it well and without fuss, and it has been noticed in the sense that everybody assumes it will happen.

Priya has posted in the floor group chat while she is still in the room. He reads it over the top of his mug because everybody is. Thank you all, best team ever, and then six names, with the little hearts, the six who went out with her on Fridays and know about the flat and the move, and then: and everyone.

He is everyone. He knows it the way you know your own handwriting. He is in fourteen group chats and every one of them says something like it: hi all, can anyone, does anybody. He is the person the whole street asks to take a parcel in. He is the reliable name on the second page of the list. And he does not, at this moment, holding a mug in a room he organized, have one person in the world who would say his name first if they were asked who they would ring.

If you know exactly what he is holding, this is for you, and I am going to be honest with you before I say anything kind. I am not going to tell you that people appreciate you. They may. It does not touch it. Being useful to many is a real thing and being particular to one is a different thing, and you have the first and you are aching for the second, and I would be lying to you if I said the first was a form of the second. It is not. What I am going to do instead is take you to a tree in a crowd, and show you what Jesus did with one man in it, and then say his kind of sentence over you, by name. Hear one thing before we go there. You have a name in the mouth of God, and the word everyone is not it. That is written, and the Holy Spirit has been saying it over you in rooms where nobody else did.

He stopped in a crowd and said one name

Let me name the pit before I say anything about the tree. The ache is not that nobody knows you. Plenty of people know you. The ache is that nobody in particular does; that you could go quiet for a month and the groups would carry on, and the parcels would go next door, and the card would eventually get bought by somebody else, and no single person would feel your absence as theirs. That is a specific loneliness and it lives in crowded rooms, and it is very hard to say out loud, because everybody would say, but we love you, and mean it, and it would land nowhere.

Now Jericho. The road is packed. Jesus is passing through, and He is not stopping; that is what the text says, He was passing through, and there is a crowd deep enough that a short man cannot see. So the short man does what a person who has been the spare his whole life does: he stops trying to be picked, and he climbs a tree to watch, out of the way, up in the leaves where nobody has to move for him.

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today."Luke 19:5

Look at three things. He stopped. He looked up, at one tree, in a crowd of hundreds. And He said a name. Not "you up there," not "friend," not "somebody come down." Zacchaeus. A man He had never spoken to, in a town He was passing through, and the first word out of His mouth to him was his own name, and the second thing was: your house, today, I am coming to yours. Not to everyone's. To his.

You are called by name by that same Jesus. I am not building that out of a warm feeling in an office kitchen; it is written, He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out (John 10:3), and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries the sound of your name from His mouth to where you are standing. By name is not a figure of speech in Scripture. It is how the Shepherd works. He does not call the flock. He calls the sheep.

First in the place that decides everything

I keep a shelter, and I will tell you the first rule of the doorstep, because I learned it from this story. When somebody comes to the door, before the form, before the bed, before anything, we ask their name and we use it. Not because it fixes their night. Because a person who has been a case number, a client, an anyone, needs to hear their own name in somebody's mouth before they can hear anything else. It is the smallest thing on the doorstep and it is the whole doorstep.

Notice what Zacchaeus had done to earn it. Nothing. He was, in that town, on nobody's list at all, or on the wrong list. He had not sorted his life out; that came after, in the house, once he had been claimed. Jesus said the name first and the man changed second, and the order is the point of the story, and it is the order this whole site stands on. The claim comes before the improvement, every time.

You have that place with Him. Hear the shape of it, because it answers the message in your hand exactly: in the room that decides everything, you are not the second page. Scripture says He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). Before. Not once He saw how reliable you were with cards; before there were cards, or floors, or anyone. And His Spirit is the one who makes that more than a doctrine you can recite, and turns it into a name you can hear said.

That is what first means here. Not first over the six with the hearts; this is not a competition and I am not going to win it for you by pushing them down. First in the sense that mattered to Zacchaeus in the tree: the eyes went to you, the name was yours, the house He was coming to was yours, and it was decided before you climbed anything.

Now, hear the plain thing too, because I would not be keeping a door if I skipped it. If the loneliness under this has grown teeth, if the thought has started that the room really would be better without you in it, then that is a sentence to say to a human being today: your doctor, somebody who knows you, or a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States. Being called by name by God and being held by a person are not rivals. He does the second through people, and He is not embarrassed to use a phone line to do it.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not go where you fear it goes. I am not going to say the six with the hearts do not matter, or that the people who never ring you first are wrong about you in some way I have to prove. I am not going to tell you a church or a friend or a family will fill this. I am going to tell you the one thing that is true whether or not any human ever says your name first again, and it is enough to stand a life on.

You were called by name before you were useful to anybody, and you are called by name now, in this kitchen, holding this mug, reading that word. That is not encouragement; it is the written way of the Shepherd, His own sheep by name, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying it, so it does not depend on the group chat or on Priya or on me. The man in the tree did not come down because he had improved. He came down because his name was in the air.

Being everyone is a real thing and you can keep doing it, and it does not touch this. In the place that decides everything, the eyes went up to your branch, and the name was yours.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in whatever room is yours to stand in. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to speak over your own name was given to you in Him, not earned by how many people you have organized. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, not the confidence in your voice. And whatever He does about the human absence, whether somebody rings you first this year or nobody does, that is His to arrange, in His timing, and it does not touch the claim, because the claim was made before any of it. So speak.

  1. Word everyone in that message, you are a true word and you are not my name. Scripture says the Shepherd calls His own sheep by name, and I have a name, and He is the one who uses it.
  2. Habit of reading myself as the spare, you learned it in a hundred rooms and I hand it back in the name of Jesus. It is written that He chose me in Him before the foundation of the world, and His Spirit says my name over me before I have organized a single thing.
  3. Lord, You stopped under one tree in a whole crowd and said one man's name, and You are saying mine now, in this kitchen. I thank You, because Your Spirit calls me by name and not by list, and I am saying my own name out loud and then Yours for me, in that order.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
