The pen is on a beaded chain and it does not reach the bottom of the clipboard, so Marion has to hold the board up at an angle to write, which is how she ends up reading every line twice.

Six forty in the evening. Pre registration for a small procedure on Thursday, nothing frightening, the kind of thing you drive yourself to and drive yourself home from if somebody signs. The waiting area has eleven chairs and a television playing weather with the sound off, and a vending machine that hums and then stops humming and then starts again.

Name. Easy. Date of birth. Address. Insurance, which takes a while because the card is in the other wallet and she has the number written on a slip of paper in her purse, which she brought, because she is a person who brings the slip of paper. Allergies. Primary care. Previous surgeries, and there is a box, and she fills it in neatly and does not use up more space than she is given.

Then: EMERGENCY CONTACT. Name. Relationship. Phone.

Marion has filled in this line for other people. That is the thing she keeps coming back to while she sits there with the pen not quite reaching. She has been the name on a neighbor's fridge for nine years. She was the number the school had for a friend's daughter through two moves and a bad winter. She sat in this exact building, in one of these eleven chairs, three separate times for three separate people, and drove all three of them home, and made soup twice.

She starts to write a name and stops after the first letter, because that woman moved to Arizona and they trade a message at Christmas. She thinks of another one and gets as far as picturing the phone call, a stranger's voice at ten at night saying the name of a hospital, and a person on the other end quietly rearranging a life she is not part of anymore, and she does not write that name either. There is a third possibility and it is her landlord.

So she leaves it blank. She takes it up to the window and the clerk takes it without looking, and the printer does something, and a wristband comes out with her name on it, and nobody says a word about the empty line, because nobody reads that line until the day somebody needs it.

Maybe you have never sat in that chair. It does not matter. You know the line. You know what it is to be the one everybody else writes down, and to have nothing to write yourself, and to find out that thirty years of being reliable did not quietly accumulate into somebody. That line is real, and I am not going to talk you out of it. But here is what was true while it sat there empty. You have a name that was already spoken out loud by God, and it was spoken long before that form was printed. It is written in John 10:3 that the Shepherd calls His own sheep by name and leads them out, and the Holy Spirit has been saying your name in that sentence in rooms where the paperwork could not.

He calls His own by name, and He does it first

Let me sit in it with you before I say anything about the way out, because this is not a small thing and it does not deserve a small answer.

Being the person other people write down is a real service and it costs a real amount, and it does not build up credit anywhere. There is no ledger. Nobody is keeping a running total of the soup and the school pickups and the three drives home, and at the moment you actually needed a name, there was no name, and that is not a misunderstanding about your worth that a compliment can fix. It is an empty line on a piece of paper, and it will still be empty on Thursday.

So I am not going to hand you people. Now read what Jesus says about how His own are known.

To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.John 10:3

Look at where the work sits in that sentence. The sheep do not identify themselves. They do not present credentials, prove their history, or make a case that they belong in this flock rather than that one. The shepherd walks in and says names, and the ones who are his come out, and the only reason any of them are his is that he already had them. You are one of the ones He calls by name, and the calling is His doing and not your standing with anybody. John 10:3 does not say the sheep announce themselves at the gate, and the Holy Spirit does not argue with what is written there. He repeats it.

And notice the second verb, because it is the one people skip. He calls them by name, and He leads them out. Out of the fold, out of the crowd, out into the open where the mixed flock is not. Being named by Him is not a private feeling you hold in a waiting room. It is a call with a direction in it, and it goes somewhere.

The blank line is real, and this is not a patch over it

Here is a promise I am going to keep for the rest of this message: I will not tell you that people appreciate you more than you think.

Maybe they do. It would not touch the line. The line was empty because there was nobody to put in it, and dressing that up as an oversight on your part would insult the thirty years you actually lived. Human absence is human absence, and the answer this message gives is not a rearrangement of your feelings about it.

What I have instead is a claim, and it is not compensation and it is not a substitute. It is a different kind of thing altogether. The claim over you was made first. Nothing about you qualified you for it. Not the reliability, not the nine years on a neighbor's fridge, not the soup, not the fact that you have never once let anybody down. If any of that were the reason, then the reason could run out, and you would be in the same room again with a different form. This is yours already, and it is not a bandage over the empty line: a Shepherd who knows your name in a crowd of four hundred. His word settled it in Isaiah 43:1 where He says He has called you by your name and you are His, and His Spirit is what makes you hear it in your own name and not somebody else's.

I want to be careful about two more things.

The first is that I am not saying the people who are not on that line were wrong, or unkind, or owe you something. This claim does not stand on a case against anybody. It stands on God's word, and it would stand exactly the same if every one of them had a perfectly good reason. The second is that I am not telling you to feel better about being alone on a Thursday. That is not what got settled. What got settled is whose you are, and it got settled while you were holding a clipboard at an angle because the pen would not reach.
