The Number He Stopped Dialing

This message is for the man who deleted a phone number he knew by heart and still says it to himself in the car without meaning to

He sits in the car for a minute before he goes in. Most nights. He has done it so long it is not a decision anymore, it is just part of arriving.

Engine off. Street lamp two houses down doing that orange thing through the windshield. Somebody's television flickering blue behind a curtain across the road. A dog gets walked past. The car ticks as it cools and he sits with his hands still on the bottom of the wheel and lets the day come off him before he takes it inside.

And in that minute, some nights, the number says itself.

Ten digits. The area code that has not been anybody's area code for years, then the three, then the four. It arrives the way a hymn arrives, whole, without being sent for. He is not thinking about it. He is thinking about a work thing or about whether there is milk. And the number goes through him the way a tune goes through you in a hardware store, and by the third digit he knows what is happening and it is already too late to stop it.

He deleted it four years ago. Properly, deliberately, sitting at the kitchen table, and he remembers pressing the thing twice because it asked him if he was sure. It is not in his phone. It is not written anywhere in the house. There is no version of it he could show you.

He knows it perfectly.

That is what nobody tells you about the deleting. It does not touch the part that has it memorized. He learned that number when he was seven years old, standing on a chair by the wall phone in a kitchen with a yellow floor, being made to say it back until he had it, because that was the number you called if anything ever happened.

He is not going to dial it. I want to be plain about that, because it is not a story about a man on the edge of dialing. He is not on the edge of anything. It was made clear to him a long time ago where he stood, and he stopped arguing about it, and he has built an entire life since, a decent one, with people in it who are glad he exists. He is not sitting in that car in agony. He is sitting in that car with the engine ticking and ten digits going through him like weather.

But here is what the number does to him, every single time, in about a second and a half. It puts a question in the car. Not a loud one. It says: whatever else is true about you, you are a man whose own people did not want him, and everything you have built since is built on top of that, and it is a load bearing fact.

If that fact is holding up your house, I am going to do something with it tonight, and it is not what you are braced for. I am not going to tell you they want you really. I do not know that and neither do you and it is not what this is. I am going to tell you about a legal document, and about who signed it, and when. You are wanted, and it was decided in a place where your family had no vote. John 1:12 does not read like a feeling. It reads like a deed, and the Spirit has been filing it in you every night in that car.

He Gave a Right, Not a Feeling

John opens his gospel at the beginning of everything, light and darkness and the Word, and then he brings it right down to a sentence about who gets to be family.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:John 1:12

The word the King James renders power is a legal word. It is the word you would use for the authority a magistrate has, or the right an heir holds. It is not strength and it is not a feeling of belonging. It is standing. It is the thing that makes a claim enforceable.

So read what actually happened in that sentence. He gave. Past tense, completed, from His side. He handed over the right to be called sons of God. Not the hope of it, not the possibility of it, not a chance at it if things go well. The right.

And notice how it comes. As many as received him. Received, not achieved. You do not compete for a thing that is being handed to you. Nobody in that sentence auditioned. Nobody was assessed against a sibling. There is no scene in it where a man is measured and found adequate, because that is not how a gift moves.

You have a right that was handed to you, and it is the enforceable kind. It stands written at John 1:12, and the Spirit has been saying it over you with the engine off and the street lamp coming through the glass.

Nothing About You Started This

Now here is the part that matters most for a man with ten digits going through him.

The right was given before you did anything with it. That is what makes it different in kind from every other belonging you have ever known. Every human place you have ever had, you had to keep. You keep it by being useful, by not being difficult, by remembering the birthdays, by being the version of yourself that room can carry. And a place you have to keep is a place you can lose, and you have lost one, and you know exactly how that goes.

This one He gave. He said it first, out of Himself, before you had a single quality to recommend you and before anybody in your family had an opinion about you either way. Nothing you have done since is what earned it and nothing that happened back then is what disqualifies you from it. That is not a nice way of putting it. That is the mechanism. A right that was handed over cannot be revoked by people who were not party to it.

And I am not offering you this as a swap. Nobody is going to stand here and tell you that being a son of God makes up for a wall phone in a kitchen with a yellow floor. It does not make up for it. It is not a consolation, it is not a substitute, and anyone who hands it to you that way has cheapened both things at once. What it is, is true, and separately true, and it was true first.

This is yours by right, and no absence at any address has the authority to cancel it. His word gave it at John 1:12, and His Spirit is what makes you feel the weight of it in your hands rather than reading it as a nice idea.

The breakthrough

So here is what is actually true in that car tonight.

The number is going to keep coming. I am not going to promise you it stops, because I am not in the business of promising you things God has not said, and a number a boy learned standing on a chair does not usually leave. It may go through you next Tuesday exactly the way it went through you last Tuesday.

What changes is what it is allowed to conclude.

For years it has arrived carrying a verdict, and the verdict is: you are a man nobody wanted. Tonight the number can arrive and it can be only what it is, which is ten digits and a kitchen with a yellow floor and a boy who was loved enough by somebody to be taught what to dial if anything happened. It does not get to hand down a ruling about whether you are wanted, because that was ruled on somewhere else, earlier, by somebody with actual standing to rule on it.

He wanted you. He said so first. He put it in writing and He handed over the right, and He did not consult a single person who has ever gone quiet on you.

You are wanted by God, and it was settled before anybody at that number formed an opinion. You have that from John 1:12, and the Spirit is not waiting on anybody's permission to make it yours.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ten digits I still know by heart, you are not the measure of whether I am wanted. Scripture says He gave the right to be called a son of God to as many as received Him, and that right was handed over and never competed for. In the name of Jesus I hold the standing He gave me and not the one that went quiet.
  2. Fear that I am nobody's son, you do not get this car. It is written in John 1:12 that He gave power to become a son of God, and the Spirit has never once offered a lesser title to a man whose own people went silent. I am wanted, and I was wanted first, and it was not put to a vote.
  3. Father, You gave the right and You gave it as a gift, and today I name one person who is family to me by faith and I do one ordinary thing for them. You are the God who wanted me before anybody at that address had an opinion about it, and I am living in the standing You handed over.
