Four Keys on One Ring

This message is for the older woman who holds a key to four houses and is expected at all of them, and who cannot remember choosing any of it

There are five keys on Junie's ring and four of them are somebody else's front door.

Red rubber band is her daughter's, out on the county road, and it is for Tuesdays and Thursdays because the bus gets there at ten past three and Kim does not get off until five. Yellow is her brother Ray's, and it is for the pill organizer on Sunday nights and the mail and the thing with the water heater. Blue is her aunt's, ninety-one years old and sharp as a tack and will not have anybody stay over, so somebody has to be able to get in. Green is the Hovie place, next door but one, and that started as the dogs for a week in 2019.

The fifth key has nothing on it. It is worn smooth and the teeth are shallow and you would not pick it out of the five if you did not already know. That one is hers.

It is midday and she is standing halfway up her own front walk with the ring in her hand and the car door still open behind her, and what has stopped her is a small ordinary question that she has never once asked in seven years.

When did I say yes to this.

Not bitterly. She wants to be very clear about that even standing there alone, because she loves all four of those houses and she would not undo one of them. But she is turning the ring over and looking for the moment. There was no conversation. Nobody sat her down. Nobody said, would you take this on, and gave her a night to think about it. There was one Tuesday, and then another Tuesday, and then somebody cut a key at the hardware store and handed it over across a kitchen table like a person passing the salt, and now four households have built their whole week on a load-bearing wall that nobody ever inspected, and the wall is a sixty-eight year old woman on a front walk at noon.

And here is the sentence underneath the sentence, the one she is not going to say out loud even to herself: they do not think of it as taking. They think of it as her. That is simply what she is for. When her name comes up in those four kitchens, it comes up the way a person mentions the spare room or the second car. Available. Assumed. Spendable.

You know that ring. Maybe yours is a group at work who route things to you without asking because you have never once said no, or a family that decided years ago which one of you would carry the holidays, or a phone that has one number in it that people call when something needs doing. You are talked about as though you are theirs to spend, and the strangest part is that nobody is cruel and nobody is lying and you cannot find a single villain anywhere in it. So hear the older claim, the one that was made before any of them ever cut a key. You are His before you were ever anybody's, and that was settled first and cannot be assigned to somebody else. Leviticus 25:55 has God saying plainly that His people are His own, and the Holy Spirit has been saying that over you on that front walk while you stood there looking for the moment you agreed.

The prior claim is the reason for the limit

Leviticus 25 is the Jubilee chapter, and it is the most economically radical chapter in the Bible, and almost every rule in it has the same reason attached to the bottom of it.

For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.Leviticus 25:55

Watch what that verse is doing, because it is doing something structural.

The chapter has just finished laying down that a Hebrew who falls into servitude cannot be held permanently, that in the year of jubilee he goes out free and back to his own family and his own ground. And when God gives the reason, He does not say it because slavery is unpleasant, and He does not say it because the man has rights of his own. He says it because the man is already taken. Unto me they are servants. Mine. He is not available to be permanently owned by anyone else, because there was a prior claim on him and it was registered first.

That is the whole legal spine of it. A later claim cannot override an earlier one. Everybody in real estate knows this and it is the first thing you look for on a deed.

You have a prior claim on you, entered before any of the four kitchens ever mentioned your name. It is written in Leviticus 25:55 and it stands on the fact that He brought His people out Himself, and the Spirit is what turns that from an ancient property law into the thing that steadies your hand on a walkway at noon.

What this does not mean

Now I have to be careful, because there are two wrong turns here and both of them are easy and both would cost you something.

The first wrong turn is thinking this is about the keys. It is not. I am not telling you to hand any of them back. I do not know your daughter's schedule or your brother's medication or whether your aunt has anybody else, and no article written by somebody who has never stood in your kitchen has any business deciding which of those four doors closes. Nothing here requires you to quit a thing.

The second wrong turn is thinking this gives you a case against somebody. It does not. There is no one to prosecute in this. Those four households did not steal you. They did what people do, which is to lean where the wall is, and none of them ever thought of themselves as spending you, and holding a trial in your own head at midday will not put one hour back in your week.

So here is what it actually changes. Not the schedule. The ownership.

You have been operating as though those four kitchens hold the deed, and therefore any change has to be negotiated with them and justified to them and paid for in guilt. They do not hold it. He does. And that means the next request that comes across a table goes to Him first, and whatever you then do about it, you do as a person with standing rather than as a wall wondering whether it is allowed to have an opinion.

You were brought out by God Himself and you are His, and that is what gives you the standing to bring Him the calendar before you answer anybody. First Corinthians 6:19 and 20 say plainly that you are not your own, and His Spirit is what makes that read as freedom rather than as one more owner joining the line.

The breakthrough

The tiredness you are carrying is not four houses' worth of tiredness. Four houses is a lot, and you are strong, and you could do four houses.

What you cannot do, and what has been quietly taking it out of you for seven years, is four houses on top of not knowing whether you are allowed to be tired. That is the weight. Not the driving. The nagging sense that you have no floor under you when you want to say I need Thursday, because the wall does not get a vote, and somewhere in you the arithmetic decided that a person who is assumed is a person who has not got standing.

You have got standing. It is older than every one of those keys and it did not come from being useful to a single one of those households.

And here is the part I want to say slowly. This is not compensation for being taken for granted. God's claim on you is not a warm thought handed over because your family never asked. It does not make up for anything, it is not a substitute for being asked, and it does not need one of those four kitchens to have done wrong in order to be true. It was true on the first Tuesday and it is true at noon today and it would be true if all four of them turned up with flowers tomorrow.

It is already settled, and it was settled before there was a key on that ring or a name on that schedule. It is written in Leviticus 25:55 that His people are His own, and the Spirit reads you that earlier deed until you stop standing on the walkway like a person waiting for permission.

Declare this over yourself

Say these once, out loud, standing where you are with whatever is in your hands. This is agreement and not effort: the claim is already made and the standing is yours in Christ. What He does with the calendar is His to decide, and He works in His own timing and His own way, which is exactly why none of the weight of this comes back onto you.

  1. Four keys on one ring, you are metal in my hand and not a claim on my life. Leviticus 25:55 says the Lord calls His people His own, and He said that over me long before anybody hung a key on this ring.
  2. Theirs to spend, you are the oldest thing I believe about myself and you are finished saying it. It is written that I am His and He said it first, and in the name of Jesus I take up the right to bring Him the week before I answer anybody about it.
  3. Lord, You call me Your own and You said it before there was one key on this ring, and I take Your word for that over seven years of Tuesdays. Your Spirit says it on this front walk at noon with the car door still open, and today I hand one thing back to You and I send no message to anybody.
