The Letter That Named a Stranger

This message is for the woman who learned through a lawyer letter that she had been formally written out of the family, and who has been unfailingly polite about it ever since

It came to the shop, because they still had the old address, and Marren read it standing up in the little back office where she does the ordering, with the kettle going and a delivery half checked on the floor behind her.

One page. Two paragraphs. Very correctly typed.

It was the second paragraph that did it, and not for the reason you would think. She had half known this was coming for a year. What she had not been ready for was her own name in the middle of a sentence, both parts of it, spelled correctly, in a line written by a man in an office two hundred miles away who had never met her and never would. Our client has given instructions in respect of the above named. The above named. That is how you refer to somebody you have never sat at a table with. That is the grammar you use for a stranger.

She read it twice, folded it back along the crease it came with, and put it in the drawer with the delivery notes.

Then she wrote back. Two lines, in her nicest handwriting. Thank you for letting me know, and for being so clear. I hope you have a good week.

That was six years ago and she has been exactly that gracious ever since. She sends a card in December, addressed to the house, signed with love from her and nothing else. When somebody at work says something about their own mother she says something warm back and means it. When a person she trusts asks her carefully how things are at home she says it is complicated, and that everybody is fine, and moves the conversation somewhere else so smoothly that they do not even notice they were moved.

She has never once said the true sentence out loud, in any room, to anybody, including herself in the car.

The politeness is not a performance. That is what makes it hard to see and hard to talk about. She is genuinely not bitter. She has taken the whole thing and made it small enough to carry without anybody having to help her carry it, and she has been doing that for six years, and the kettle boils and she finishes checking the delivery and the day goes on.

And somewhere underneath the graciousness there is a sentence she has never let get all the way formed, which is that she must be the kind of person it is reasonable to write out. Not cruel of them. Reasonable. That is the sentence, and it has never been spoken, and it has been doing all of the work.

You have one of those sentences. It might not have come on paper. It might have been a Christmas you were not told about until afterward, or a group photograph, or the slow way a door closes when nobody wants to be the one who says anything. And you have been dignified about it, because what else is there. You are one Christ calls His own out loud, because Hebrews 2:11 says that He is not ashamed to call them brethren, and the Spirit has been saying that word over you in a back office with the kettle going, six years running, whether or not you were listening.

The word the verse goes out of its way to use

Read this one slowly, because the writer of Hebrews has chosen a word he did not have to choose.

For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren.Hebrews 2:11

He could have written that Christ calls them brethren and left it there. Instead he raises the possibility of shame and then denies it. That construction only exists because somebody, somewhere, expected the answer to go the other way.

That is the sentence you have been living underneath, and here is Scripture picking it up and dealing with it directly. Not by telling you that nobody was ever ashamed of you. By telling you what Christ does about it, in public, on the record, using a family word.

And notice the reason given. It is not because they turned out well. It is because he that sanctifies and they who are sanctified are all of one. The kinship rests on a shared origin that He established, and He is the one who established it, and He is the senior party in the arrangement. It is not a merger of equals that could be dissolved by a change of heart on His side.

You have a place in a family that rests on His work and not on your standing, since that is what stands written in Hebrews 2:11, and His Spirit does not read that line to you in a quieter voice than the one it was written in.

I want to say something about the letter and then leave it. I am not going to make a case against anyone. There is no villain being built in this message and there is nothing here that requires the people in that house to be wrong for you to be right, because your standing does not sit on a verdict against them. It sits on something older that has nothing to do with them at all.

And I am not going to tell you what to do about them either. Not a call, not a card, not a conversation, not a timetable for how you are supposed to feel about it by next spring. That is not what this is and I have no instructions for you at that address.

He said it before you were anybody's anything

Here is the trap, and you are close enough to it that it is worth naming.

You will want this to be something you have qualified for by conduct. Six years of grace under pressure. Never a raised voice, never a version of the story told to make anybody look bad. And you will quietly hope that the good behavior is what is being rewarded here, because that is an economy you understand and can keep working in.

It is not. Nothing you did got you called brethren. He said it first, over people who had contributed nothing to the arrangement, and He said it in a document that predates your dignity by two thousand years.

You were brought in by a decision made before you were born, and Ephesians 1:5 says He predestinated you unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will, and it is the Spirit who bears witness with your spirit that the word applies to you.

Which means the graciousness is safe. You do not have to keep it up to stay in. You could have a bad week about this, out loud, and nothing about your standing would move a millimeter, because your standing was never resting on how well you were taking it.

That is worth sitting with for a second. Six years of holding a thing at exactly the right temperature so that nobody has to deal with it. You are allowed to put it down. Not to hand it to somebody. Just to put it down.

You are free to set the whole thing down today, because Matthew 11:28 has Him telling everyone who labors and is heavy laden to come to Him and be given rest, and the Spirit is not waiting for you to finish being gracious about it first.

The breakthrough

Marren still has the letter in the drawer with the delivery notes. It can stay there. This is not a message about throwing something away, and it is not about being finished with anything on a schedule.

It is about which sentence is load bearing.

The one on the page is real and it is signed and it says what it says, and I have not asked you to pretend otherwise at any point in this. But it is a recent sentence, written by people inside a situation, about arrangements. It is not a ruling on what you are, and it never had the standing to be one, and the thing it made you feel about yourself was an inference, not a finding.

The older sentence is Christ saying brethren, out loud, on the record, about people who had done nothing to earn the word. He said it first. He was not embarrassed by it then and He has not become embarrassed by it since, and there is no letter anywhere that gets read out after His.

And it is not compensation. I am not offering you God as the family that turned up when the other one did not. That would make Him second and He is not second, He is prior, and the household you belong to now is the older one and the larger one and the one everything else has been happening inside.

This is yours in the back office with the kettle going and not one day when something gets sorted out: a place in the family that Christ names out loud, and His word settled it in Hebrews 2:11, and the Spirit puts you inside the word brethren every time He reads it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Letter with my full name on it, you do not decide whose family I am in. Hebrews 2:11 says He is not ashamed to call them brethren, and He said that over me out loud.
  2. Fear that I am the removable one, go, in the name of Jesus. I am one Christ owns in public and is not ashamed to name. His Spirit bears witness with my spirit about it in rooms where I have never said a word.
  3. Father, You brought me in and You are not embarrassed to say so. I am naming somebody who is family to me by faith today, and doing one ordinary thing for them before the day is out.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
