Her Name in Five Boxes

This message is for the family planning table where she carries in the tea and hears her own name written into five boxes on the schedule without anyone asking her, and needs release from being owned by other people's expectations

The wedding is in three weeks and the planning has taken over her mother's kitchen table the way weather takes over a village. There are eleven people round it. Two aunts, the cousins, her brother with the marker pen, a neighbor who came for sugar an hour ago and has stayed to give opinions. Somebody has drawn the week out on the back of a flattened cereal box, seven columns, and they are filling the boxes in with who does what.

Nadia is carrying in the tea. She always carries in the tea; it is a thing her hands do without her, twelve small glasses on the brass tray, mint leaves standing up in each one, the tray tilting slightly because the handle on the left has been loose since her father was alive. She comes in through the doorway with it and hears her own name.

"Nadia can take Auntie to the tailor Tuesday." "Nadia will do the Thursday cooking, she does not mind." "Put Nadia down for the airport." "And Nadia is here Friday anyway, so."

Nobody looks up. Nobody is unkind. Her brother is already writing, and she watches the marker put her name in a box, and another box, and by the time she has set the tray down without spilling, her name is in five of them. Not one person at that table has asked her a question. It is not that they think she will say no. It is that the asking has never occurred to them, because at some point that nobody can date, Nadia stopped being a person you ask and became a resource you allocate. Theirs to spend.

She hands round the glasses. She smiles. She has been smiling like this for years. And under the smile there is a sentence she has never said and does not know how to say, and it is not no. It is: whose am I, actually?

Somebody has a schedule with your name on it. Maybe it is a family; maybe it is a workplace, a church, a friend who books you like a room. They talk about you in the third person while you are standing in the doorway with the tea. And you have never once put down the tray and asked out loud the only question that matters, which is not what do I owe them but who holds the claim on me at all. You have an answer to that question already, and it was settled long before your name went into anybody's boxes. It is written, and the Spirit who lives in you is what makes it something standing under your feet rather than a nice idea.

The pen that actually decides

Let me name what it is like before I say anything else, because it has sat under your smile for a long time and nobody has said it back to you.

It is not that people ask too much. People asking is fine; asking is what people who love each other do. It is that they have stopped asking, and the not-asking is the wound. Your time is talked about as though it were already theirs. Your yes is assumed so completely that it has stopped being a yes; a yes that cannot be a no is not a yes, it is a fixture. And somewhere in you the sentence has formed that this is what you exist for. That the spare one, the available one, the one who is here Friday anyway, does not really have a self to be asked about.

Hear me plainly. I am not going to tell you to put the tray down and walk out of the kitchen. I am not going to script a confrontation for you, or an exit, or a speech at the table. That is not what this is, and a person who told you it was would be handing you a second schedule to replace the first. What I am going to do is show you a sentence Paul wrote to a church full of people who were, quite literally, other people's property, and what he told them they were.

You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.1 Corinthians 7:23

Read the order. First the price. Then the instruction. He does not say make yourself free and he does not say negotiate a better arrangement. He says: a price has already been paid for you, by somebody, and that fact settles whose you are, so do not let anybody else's claim sit on top of it. You were bought, and the One who paid is Christ, and no schedule written on the back of a cereal box outranks the claim He made on the cross; that is written, and it is His Spirit who makes it stand under you and not merely sit on a page. Not my opinion. Paul's sentence, to people with far less freedom than you, and it was true for them in a house they could not leave.

Now hear what that does and what it does not do. It does not tell you what to do with Tuesday. It tells you who owns Tuesday. Those are different questions and the whole ache is that you have been letting the first one answer the second. When you know whose you are, the family can still ask, and you can still say yes, gladly, out of love, because a yes from a person who could have said no is a gift, and a yes from a resource is only a delivery. You are not anybody's resource, and Scripture says the price on you was paid once and in full by Christ, and the Spirit who lives in you is the proof of ownership that nobody at that table can write over.

Paul says something else that helps here, in Romans 14. He is talking about believers judging each other, and he says: who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls. That is a sentence to hand back to the whole table, silently, without saying a word to any of them. You are the servant of another. Not theirs. His. You stand or fall before Him, and Paul finishes the verse with the loveliest clause: and he will stand, for the Master is able to make him stand. You do not stand before your aunts. You stand before God, and He is able to make you stand.

And there is Galatians 1:10, which is Paul asking himself a question out loud: am I now trying to please people, or God? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Notice he does not say pleasing people is evil. He says it cannot be the master. There is only one master's pen that decides who you are, and it is not the marker in your brother's hand. You have one Master and He is Christ, and the Spirit He gave you is not shared with the schedule; the word says so, and it says so about you tonight.

I know two things try to stand between you and receiving this. One says this was for Corinth and slaves in Roman houses and not for a woman with a tea tray in her mother's kitchen. The other says it may be for people, but you have been theirs to spend for so long that the deed has surely transferred. Hear me. The Word does not age out, and Jesus said the Spirit He sends stays with His people to the end, which reaches your Friday. And a price paid once does not lapse because somebody else kept writing your name in boxes. Their pen was never the deed.

One more thing, and I say it plainly because I would rather say it and not be needed. If being someone's to spend has crossed into being unsafe, that is not something a page can carry for you and not something you should carry alone. Tell somebody tonight, a person you trust or the emergency number or a helpline where you live. That is not me telling you what to do about your family. That is me refusing to leave you standing in the doorway by yourself.

The breakthrough

So here is what this asks of you, and notice that none of it happens at the table. Nobody has to hear it. No message goes to anyone. It happens in the doorway with the tray in your hands, between you and the One who paid.

Ask the question you have never asked. Not what do I owe them. Whose am I? And then let Him answer it out of His own book, because He already has. You are His, bought at a price, standing or falling before your own Master and no other, and He is able to make you stand; that is 1 Corinthians 7 and Romans 14, and the Spirit inside you is the one making it real while you read. I am not speaking my comfort over you. I am reading you what is written and telling you who carries it.

What you do with Tuesday after that is between you and Him and it may look exactly the same from the outside. Whether the table ever starts asking is theirs to decide and His to work on, and I put no date on either. What is settled is that the pen that decides whose you are was never at that table.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud, in the doorway, with the tray or without it. Not because saying it transfers the deed; the deed was settled at a cross long before the schedule was drawn. You say it because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and He gives His people a mouth to agree with a claim He has already made, and His Spirit makes the agreeing more than air. Jesus said a faith no bigger than a grain of mustard, spoken to a mountain, moves it, and the mountain here is a lifetime of being theirs to spend written in marker pen on the back of a cereal box. A grain against a lifetime. He asked for the grain. What He does with the family and the Fridays is His to decide, and I do not put a timetable on Him. But whose you are is not in question, and you may say so.

  1. Schedule with my name in five boxes, you were written by people I love and you are not the deed to my life. Scripture says I was bought at a price and I am not to become the property of people, and the One who paid it holds the only claim on me.
  2. Fear that I am only worth what I cover, get out in the name of Jesus. It is written that I stand or fall before my own Master and He is able to make me stand, and the Holy Spirit in me is not on loan to anybody's plan.
  3. Lord, You bought me and You hold the claim, and I hand You back the Thursdays and the airport runs and every box my name was written into without my mouth being asked. I thank You, because a yes I give from You is a gift and not a delivery, and I am Yours before anybody picked up the pen, and Yours after everybody has finished writing.
