Doug Ferrante did it on a Sunday night, and he did it carefully, because a test only works if nobody knows it is running.
He powered the phone all the way down and put it in the drawer under the silverware tray. He did not tell anyone he was going anywhere, because he was not going anywhere. He was staying exactly where he was, in the second-floor apartment on Ashbury with the radiator that bangs, and the point was to find out what happened in the world if he simply stopped.
Eight days.
He was between contracts, so nobody at work needed anything. He had food. He watered the ficus by the window every third day because it was the one living thing in the apartment that required something from him, and he thought about that more than once while he was doing it. He heard his neighbor's television through the wall, the same show at the same hour, and he found himself waiting for it. On day four he stood at the peephole for a while and watched a slice of hallway with nothing in it.
The mail went into the box downstairs and stayed there. He could see the little brass door from the landing and he did not open it, because opening it would be a kind of cheating.
On the ninth morning he took the phone out of the drawer, sat down at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, and turned it on. It took a minute to wake up. Then it caught up with the week all at once, buzzing in his hand like something with a heartbeat.
Eleven notifications.
A dentist confirming an appointment. A pharmacy telling him a prescription was ready and then telling him again. Two updates from a bank. A delivery service asking him to rate a driver. A reminder from a service he had forgotten he was still on. Weather alerts.
Every one of them a machine.
Doug sat there for a long time with the coffee going cold and the phone face down on the table, and then he got up, put on his shoes, went down and got a week of mail out of the little brass door, and walked to the place on the corner and said good morning to the man behind the counter, who said it back. He has never told a living soul that he did this. He got his answer, and the answer was quiet, and he has been carrying it politely ever since.
You know that week. Maybe you never ran it as an experiment; maybe it just happened to you one January and you noticed afterward what the phone had not done. Maybe you are running a smaller version of it right now, waiting to see how long it takes. I am not going to tell you the phone will ring, and I am not going to tell you that somebody out there is thinking of you and just got busy, because you have already checked and that is not what this is. Here is what I will tell you, and it is the only thing in this article that can carry the weight you are carrying. You have been come for, and the search was underway before the week ever started. Matthew 18:12 says the shepherd goes off into the mountains after the one, and the Holy Spirit has been walking that verse toward you across all eight of those days.
And one plain thing first, because it matters more than the rest of this: if what you are actually carrying tonight is heavier than being unnoticed, if some part of you has been thinking about not being here at all, then this article is not the first thing you need. Tell one living person tonight, or in the United States call or text 988 and talk to somebody who will stay on the line with you. That is not a detour away from being claimed. It is the first thing being claimed looks like.
The arithmetic heaven refuses
Jesus tells this one as a question, and He asks it of people who worked with animals and knew the economics of a flock.
How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?Matthew 18:12
Every listener knew that this is not how you run a flock. You do not walk away from ninety-nine head, unattended, on open ground, in the dark, because one wandered off. The one is inside the margin. The one is what the margin is for. Any careful man would cut the loss and be back at the fold by nightfall with the ninety-nine safe, and nobody in that crowd would have called him hard-hearted for it.
That is exactly why Jesus asks it as a question. He is not describing best practice. He is describing a shepherd whose arithmetic is wrong on purpose, because He is describing His Father, and the whole point of the story is that the count is not what moves Him. The one moves Him.
Read the verb order too. Leaves, goes, seeks. Three actions, all of them the shepherd's, none of them the sheep's. The animal on the hillside does nothing at all in that sentence except be missing. It does not call out. It does not find its way back. It is not even facing the right direction. You are the one He left the ninety-nine to go and get. Scripture puts that arithmetic in Matthew 18:12, and the Spirit does not quietly correct it into something more sensible on the way to you.
He did not send. He came.
There is an older passage behind this one, and it is more direct, and I want it in your hands because it closes a door that people leave open.
The shepherds of Israel had failed the flock, and God said so, and then He said what He was going to do about it. He did not appoint a committee and He did not delegate a search.
For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.Ezekiel 34:11
I, even I. That doubling is in the Hebrew because the point is the identity of the searcher. The one who went out into the weather was not a subordinate carrying a message. It was God Himself.
And here is the sentence this whole site rests on, in the shape this category needs. He came first, and nothing about you brought Him. There is no version of that story where the sheep does something noticeable and the search begins in response. The going out is not a reaction. It started while the animal was still walking the wrong way down a slope in the dark, uncounted, unmissed by anyone at the fold.
You were sought out by God Himself, and He did not send anyone instead of coming. Ezekiel 34:11 has Him saying I myself will search, and the Spirit keeps that pronoun exactly where God put it rather than softening it into a general kindness.
Which is also why I am not going to hand you a person. This is not the place where I tell you that a friend is about to turn up, or that a church will fill this, or that your phone is going to behave differently next week. I do not know that, nobody knows that, and building your standing on it would be building it on the same ground that just gave way. What I know is who has already come, and that one is not pending.
So here is what is happening now, at the kitchen table, with the coffee cold and the phone face down.
The week stands. I am not taking it off you and I am not explaining it away. Eleven machines is eleven machines, and you were right about what it meant, and the ache of that is not a misunderstanding you need to be talked out of.
What is finishing today is the authority you handed that week. You ran a test to find out something true about yourself, and the test was honest, and it was aimed at the wrong instrument. It measured what people did. It could not touch what God had already done, and He had already done it. It is already finished, the going out and the finding, and no week of silence can undo an arrival. That stands on what is written in Matthew 18:12, and the Spirit is not waiting on a phone to ring before He says so over you.
What is meant to happen today is not the notifications changing. It is you knowing which direction the searching came from, and stopping the experiment, because the result is in and it was in before you started.
Declare this over yourself
- Eight days of quiet, you are a week that happened and you are not the measure of whether I am wanted. Matthew 18:12 says the shepherd leaves the ninety and nine and goes into the mountains after one, and He was already out on that hill.
- Old idea that I am not worth the trip, you do not get to price me, in the name of Jesus, because it is written that the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost. I am not a man nobody came for, and the Spirit settled that on a hillside long before I put the phone in the drawer.
- Jesus, You went out for one while the ninety-nine were safe at the fold, and I thank You that You never checked the count before You went. I have been found, and I am saying so out loud today and then standing still long enough to let it be true.
