"Make me look like a man who has it together," he says, and the barber laughs, because that is what everybody says, and starts on the back with the clippers.
Saturday afternoon and the shop is full. Two boys waiting with a football between their feet. An old man asleep under a newspaper. The radio doing what radios do on a Saturday. And in the chair, under the cape, a man who has decided that tomorrow he is going back. He has not been in a church in eleven years, and he has been arguing with God in the car for the last three months, and this week he lost the argument, and now he is getting a haircut about it.
Not because God cares about his hair. He knows that. He is getting the haircut because he cannot bear to walk in as the man he currently is. He wants to arrive as the man he is going to be. Tidier. Sorted. A month sober instead of nine days. The credit card paid down. The thing with his sister fixed. He has a whole list in his head of the version of himself that God would prefer, and he has been trying to become that man for eleven years so that he could come back as him, and he never quite gets there, so he never quite comes back. The haircut is the closest he could get by Saturday.
The clippers stop. The barber picks up the hand mirror and holds it behind his head so he can see the back, the way barbers do, and there he is. Same face. Same tired eyes. Tidier around the edges. And the thing he sees in the mirror, in the second before he says "yeah, that's good," is that it is still him. There was never going to be a different man in the mirror. There is only this one, and this one is who is going in tomorrow, and this one is who has been arguing with God in the car.
Oye. Hear me, because I know that chair. You keep assuming there is a version of you He would prefer. Cleaner, sorted, a month further along, the debt gone, the thing fixed. And you have been trying to become that person first so you can be claimed as that person, and you have been trying for so long that trying has become the whole relationship. I am named for a man who did exactly that, and I am going to tell you what God did to him, because it is the opposite of what you are braced for. You are already claimed by the God you are trying to get tidy for. It is written on a road in the desert, and His Spirit is why that arrives as your own news and not as somebody else's history.
He spoke to Jacob with the stolen blessing still in the bag
Let me name the thing you carry, because it is heavier than a haircut.
It is the constant sense of being the draft. That whoever is in the chair today is the rough version, and God is waiting for the clean copy. It is the arithmetic you do without noticing: I will pray properly when the drinking is sorted, I will go back when the money is straight, I will call myself His when I have earned the right to. It is the exhaustion of auditioning for a claim you assume has conditions, and the shame of never passing an audition that was never being held. And under all of it, the fear that if He saw you as you actually are, in the chair, under the cape, before the improvements, He would prefer to wait.
Now come to a road in the desert, because Scripture puts a man on it who is worse than you.
Jacob has just cheated his blind father and robbed his brother, and he is running for his life with a stolen blessing in his bag. He has not repented. He has not fixed the thing with his brother; that takes twenty years. He has not become anyone's better version. He lies down with a stone for a pillow, a fugitive with nothing to recommend him, and God speaks.
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.Genesis 28:15
Read what is not there. There is no "when you have made it right with Esau." There is no "once you have become the man I can work with." God claims a heel-grabber in the middle of his flight, before one thing about him has improved, and He says I am with you to a man whose bag is still full of what he stole.
You were claimed before you improved, and the claim was made on the man in the mirror, not the man on the list. I am not being generous with you; it is written on a road in Genesis, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what God said over Jacob and bears witness inside you that it is said over you (Romans 8:16). That is His work, not your arithmetic.
The change came after, and it was welcome
Now hear the second half, because the guardrail on this is love and not slackness.
Jacob did change. Twenty years later, at a river in the dark, he wrestled with God and came away with a new name, Israel, and a limp he carried the rest of his life. God was not indifferent to who Jacob became. He remade him. But look at the order. Bethel first, the claim on a fugitive. The Jabbok twenty years after, the change in a man already claimed. And even then, Scripture keeps calling him Jacob. Both names, the rest of his life. The claim did not wait for the change, and the change did not cancel the claim.
That is the distinction you have been collapsing in the barber's chair. The claim and the change are two different things, and you have been treating the second as the price of the first. It is not. The change is what He does in a person He has already claimed. It is welcome. It is His. It is not the door.
You are His now, and the better version is not the condition; it is what His Spirit is making of a man He already owns. Paul says God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), which is before you had a list, before you had a face, before there was anything in you to tidy. And the Spirit who does the tidying works from the inside of a claim, never from outside it.
So when the man in the mirror walks in tomorrow with nine days and not a month, with the debt and the thing with his sister, he walks in as a claimed man with unfinished work in him, which is what every claimed man is. You have His word that He does not leave until He has done what He promised, and what He promised was to be with you all the way through the doing. That is Genesis 28:15 read to the end, and His Spirit is the one carrying it out in you at a pace that is His.
Here is what has to happen before you leave the chair.
The mountain is not your list. Some of your list is good and He is going to help you with it. The mountain is the rumor that the list is the condition, that there is a version of you He would prefer to claim, and that you have to arrive as him. That rumor has been standing between you and the door for eleven years, and it moves the way every mountain moves. Jesus said faith the size of a seed says to a mountain, move, and it moves (Matthew 17:20). Not thinks it. Says it. And the seed here is one sentence, out loud, in the same breath as the thing you were surest disqualified you.
You are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and that was true of you before your haircut and it is true of you with the debt still on the card. Scripture says that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8), which is the claim made at its earliest possible moment, and the Spirit is the one who makes that dead letter a living fact in the man in the mirror. He does the change. You do the saying. And what He makes of you from here is His to decide and His to do.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the chair, at the mirror, wherever you are. You are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and that standing is given to you and not achieved by you, which is why you have authority to speak to a rumor that has run your life for years. The ground is what Scripture says God did with Jacob on the road, and the current is His Spirit bearing witness in you, not the strength of your resolve. What He changes in you and when He changes it is His timing and His work, and I am not promising you the list gets shorter by any date. I am handing you the order things actually happened in.
- Mirror in the barber's chair, you are showing me the man He already claimed. Scripture says God spoke to Jacob on the road with a stolen blessing in his bag, and I am His with today's face and not tomorrow's.
- Version of me He would prefer, you are a rumor and you are not a condition. In the name of Jesus, He said mine before I improved, and the changing He does in me is His welcome work and never His entry fee.
- Lord, You claimed me as I was and not as I might become, and Your Spirit tells my spirit I am Yours. I thank You, because the claim was Yours before I could clean up for it, and I am naming the thing I thought disqualified me and saying Yours straight after it.
