Wanted By God1 John 3:1

The Photograph She Was Cropped Out Of

This message is for the woman who found the family portrait reprinted without her in it, and who understood immediately that it was not a mistake

The hallway is narrow and the pictures go up the whole length of it, so you look at them one at a time whether you meant to or not.

Yvonne had gone down there for the bathroom, which is at the end past the linen closet, and she stopped because the big one at eye level was new. Not new as in a new occasion. New as in reprinted, larger than before, in a wide oak frame with a proper mat, the kind you order rather than pick up.

It was the picture from the lake. She knew every inch of it. Eight people on the dock in the flat light before dinner, her uncle holding the dog by the collar, the youngest one blurred because she moved. Yvonne had been on the left, half a step back the way she always stood, in the gray cardigan.

In this one there were seven. The crop came in from the left and took her cleanly, and the composition afterward is fine, better balanced if anything, which is the detail that sat down in her chest and stayed. Somebody looked at the frame and the mat and the wall and decided where the edge should fall, and the edge fell just past her shoulder.

There is a sliver of gray at the very margin, maybe a quarter inch of sleeve, left in because nobody at the print shop knew there was anything to be careful about. She is the only person alive who would notice it, and she noticed it in about two seconds.

She went to the bathroom. She washed her hands. She came back out and had a perfectly good evening, complimented the dessert, helped carry plates, drove home at ten and did not say a word about it to anybody, then or in the four years since.

She understood immediately that it was not a mistake. Not because anybody is a monster. Because a person ordering a large print makes a series of small ordinary decisions, and one of them was where the edge goes, and the edge went where it went.

I am not going to build a case here. Not against the person who ordered it, not against anybody in that hallway. That is not what this is for and it would not help you if it were. But I want you to see what a print on a wall is and what it is not, because you have been treating one as a ruling. You are called a child of God, and the calling came from the Father and never from a family's arrangement of a wall. It is written in 1 John 3:1 that the Father bestowed this love on us, and the Holy Spirit has been holding you in that verb bestowed in every hallway you have walked down since.

Behold what manner of love, and notice who did the bestowing

There is a sentence in John's letter that people quote for its warmth and then walk straight past the part that would actually hold them up.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.1 John 3:1

Bestowed is a giving word and it is entirely one directional. Nobody applies for a bestowal. Nobody is shortlisted for one. It is given by the one who has it to give, on his own initiative, to whoever he decides, and the receiving party contributes nothing to the transaction except being there.

And then look at the second half, which is the half that gets left out of the greeting cards. Therefore the world knoweth us not. John does not promise that being called a child of God makes you legible to everybody around you. He says the opposite, calmly, in the same breath: some people are not going to recognize what you are, and that is not a sign the bestowal failed. It is a sign they did not recognize Him either.

You have a standing that was bestowed on you by the Father and was never subject to anybody's recognition of it. 1 John 3:1 puts the giving in His hands and the not knowing somewhere else entirely, and the Spirit has been keeping those two facts separate in you when everything in you wanted to fuse them.

A print is a decision about a wall

So let me put the two things side by side, because everything turns on refusing to confuse them.

A reprint is a decision about a hallway. Somebody chose a size, a frame, a mat and an edge. That is a real decision and it had a real effect, and I am not going to tell you it was nothing or that you misread it. You read it exactly right the first time, in two seconds, which is what people who have been reading rooms their whole lives do.

But a decision about a wall is not a ruling on whose you are, and it has never once been within anybody's power to make it one. The Father bestowed. That word is in the perfect tense and it is His alone, and there is no committee attached to it.

It is already settled that you are wanted, and the wanting started with Him and not with anybody's second thoughts. His word closed it in 1 John 3:1, and His Spirit is what turns that from a fine sentence about believers in general into a sentence with your name inside it.

And the claim was made first. Nothing about you qualified you for it. Not standing half a step back so you would not crowd anybody, not the four years of not mentioning it, not the plates you carried out. If any of that had been the qualification, the qualification could have been withdrawn on the day somebody ordered a large print, and it was not, because it never rested there.

I am not going to tell you what to do about the hallway. I am not telling you to say something, and I am not telling you to stay quiet, and I am certainly not putting a date on forgiving anybody. That is between you and God and it moves at the pace He sets. Nothing in this message requires a phone call or a conversation, and nothing in it is waiting on somebody coming round.

The breakthrough

So here is the correction, and it is a small one, and it changes the size of the room.

You have been carrying the reprint as evidence. Not evidence about a hallway, evidence about you: that you are the one who can be taken out and the picture still works, that you are the optional one, the balance improved by your absence. That is the sentence you actually took home that night, and it is the one that has been running for four years.

It is not true, and the reason it is not true has nothing to do with anybody in that house being wrong or right. It is not true because whether you are wanted was decided by the Father, in advance, as a bestowal, and no amount of cropping downstream reaches back up to touch that.

This is yours right now and no reprint has any standing over it: a Father who gave the love before you were in a position to ask for it. You have that on the authority of Psalm 27:10, which says that when father and mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up, and the Spirit is not offering a second opinion on it in that hallway or in yours.

The picture on the wall is a picture on a wall. It is not the record. There is another one, and it was made by somebody who does not edit.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Family portrait reprinted without me, you are a print and you are not a verdict. Scripture says in 1 John 3:1 that the Father bestowed His love and called me His own, and He did that before anybody chose a frame.
  2. Fear that I am spare, you do not speak for me here. In the name of Jesus I am done reading an edge on a photograph as a ruling on whether I am wanted, because the Father gave first and nothing about me was the reason.
  3. Father, You bestowed this love and You called me Your child, and I am taking You at Your word today. I am Yours, and I am doing one ordinary thing for one of Your own this afternoon.
