The Card Everyone Signed

They did it at twenty to three on a Friday, in the break room at Ridgeway Supply, because that is when the counter goes quiet and the delivery drivers are back in.

There was a sheet cake from the grocery store with blue frosting on it and Del's name spelled right, which he noticed and was glad about. There were paper plates. Somebody had taped a length of gold streamer over the vending machine. The branch manager said a few words that were true and pleasant, thirty-one years, never missed a Monday, knows the catalog better than the catalog does, and everybody laughed at the catalog line because it was a good line, and Del laughed too.

Then Marilyn from accounts handed him the card.

It was a big one, the oversized kind, a photograph of a fishing dock on the front and Best Wishes printed across the top in gold. He opened it in the break room the way you are supposed to, with everybody watching, and he made the face a man makes and said thank you, and then he folded it under his arm and cut the cake.

He read it properly that night at the kitchen table with the light on over the stove.

Forty-one signatures. He counted. Front flap, back flap, all around the printed verse, up the margins, some in ballpoint and some in that thick silver pen Marilyn keeps in her drawer. Forty-one people who had worked beside him for anywhere from eight months to twenty-six years.

And not one sentence. Not one. Not a "we'll miss you at the counter," not a "thanks for covering for me in March," not an inside joke, not a single line that could only have been written by one person about one person. Forty-one names and forty-one names only, laid out around a printed poem that a company in Ohio wrote for anybody.

He sat with it for a good while. He was not angry. That is the part he could not explain to himself. He was not angry at one of them, because he knew exactly how it goes: the card comes around on a Tuesday, the line at the counter is six deep, you sign it and pass it on. A signature is what a moving line has time for.

What he understood, sitting there under the stove light, was something he had actually known for about twenty years and had never once put into words. He was liked. Genuinely, widely, uncomplicatedly liked. And he was nobody's particular person. Those are two different things, and a man can hold the first one his whole life and never once be handed the second.

You know that card. Maybe yours is a group message where the thumbs go up and nobody types, or a hallway full of people who are pleased to see you and would not notice for three weeks if you stopped coming. You are liked in general. You have never been picked out. You have a name that God says in particular, and He was saying it long before anybody in that room learned it. Isaiah 49:16 says He engraved you on the palms of His hands, and the Spirit has been holding that page open in front of you for longer than you have known it was there.

A signature and an engraving are not the same mark

Sit here a minute before we move, because this is the part people skip.

I am not going to tell you that those forty-one people cared more than the card shows. I do not know that, and neither do you, and a man who has been handed that reassurance before knows how thin it goes down. Something real is missing and it is fair to say so out loud. There is a difference between a room that likes you and a person who knows you, and you have had a lot of the first and very little of the second, and pretending otherwise would be doing you the same favor the card did.

So let me show you a different kind of mark instead.

Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:16

Look at what that sentence costs. A signature is a mark you make on a piece of paper and then hand the pen to the next person. It costs you a second and a half and it leaves nothing on you at all. An engraving is cut. It goes into the surface, it stays in the surface, and the surface here is not a card and not a wall and not a list on a clipboard. It is His hands. He put your name in the one place He cannot look at anything without seeing it.

And read the verse before it if you ever get the chance, because the question underneath it is whether a mother could forget the child at her own breast, and the answer God gives is that even if she did, He does not. That is the register this is written in. Not fondness. Not general goodwill. The one relation the world thinks cannot be forgotten, and He goes one further.

You are engraved and not merely listed, and the cutting was done at His expense and not yours. It is written in Isaiah 49:16 that the marks are on His hands rather than in a book on a shelf somewhere, and the Spirit does not read that verse to you as somebody else's mail.

God has never once dealt with a general public

Here is the thing about God that nobody warns a quiet man about. He does not do crowds. He has never once managed a general public.

He came to a garden asking one question with one man's name in it. He called Abram out of a city by name. He stopped Moses at a bush by saying it twice. He got Samuel out of bed at night by saying it twice again. He stood in a graveyard and said Lazarus, and one man came out, and the preachers have joked for four hundred years that if He had left the name off, every grave on the hill would have emptied. He said Mary in a garden and a woman who had mistaken Him for the gardener knew Him instantly, because she had heard Him say her name before and nobody else said it that way.

That is not decoration. That is the working method. Jesus put it plainly about His own: the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out, John 10:3. By name. Not by the flock, not by the count, not by "everybody who is ready." Sheep are the most interchangeable animal a man could have picked for the picture, and the shepherd in the picture refuses to treat them that way.

You were called by name, out of a crowd, by somebody who has never once needed a reminder of who you are. John 10:3 says the calling is by name and the leading out follows it, and the same Spirit is what makes a shepherd's sentence land on a man at a kitchen table with a card in front of him.

And there is one more, and it is the one that undoes the card completely. Revelation 2:17 promises a white stone with a new name written on it, and the text says nobody knows that name except the one who receives it. Think about what that means. A name held between exactly two, not read out at a supper, not passed around a break room for signing. This is yours already, a name known by two and not one signature more. He promised it in Revelation 2:17, and the Spirit keeps it where it was put, between Him and you.
