The Swimmer Who Stopped Waving

He was nine, and the water took him out sideways so fast that by the time he understood what was happening the striped umbrella was small.

He did the things a nine year old does. He swam straight at the beach, which is the wrong thing and which everybody does. He got nowhere and he got tired in a way he had never been tired. Then he waved. Both arms, the way you see it done. Then he shouted, and got a mouthful, and coughed, and could not shout again for a while, and then could not really get his arms up any more because they had started doing something else without asking him, pressing down at the water, trying to find a floor.

There were maybe sixty people on that beach. A radio going. Somebody's dog. He could see all of it, perfectly clearly, the whole time.

Nobody looked up.

What got him back was a set of waves that came through big and shoved him inside the bar, and then his feet found sand, and he came up the beach on his hands and knees for the last part because his legs had gone. He sat down on the towel next to his mother. She was reading. She said, do you want the last sandwich.

He said no thanks.

He has never told anybody that story. Not once, not to a soul, in forty three years. And on the drive home that afternoon, somewhere on the highway with his hair still wet, a nine year old boy quietly finished a piece of arithmetic and filed it, and it has run his life ever since. Shouting does not bring anybody. You get yourself back or you do not get back.

So he does not shout. He is fifty two and he has a phone with two hundred and eleven contacts in it and he has never once used it for this. He drove himself to the hospital in March and drove himself home the same day with the anesthetic still in him. He was out of work for five months and told no one until he was back in. He is the one everybody calls, which is not a contradiction, it is the same policy from the other side: help flows outward from him, and it has not flowed the other way since he was nine years old on a towel saying no thanks to a sandwich.

He would tell you he is fine. He is not lying. It is just that fine is the only word he has been given room to use.

And you know that water. Maybe there was no beach. Maybe it was a hallway, a phone you did not pick up, a night you got through by yourself and never mentioned. You stopped waving because waving did not work, and you built a whole life out of that, and the life works, and it is very quiet. But there is Someone who never once needed a signal from the water. You were come for, and He did not wait on the beach to see whether you would raise an arm, and Psalm 18:16 is where the word records it, that He sent from above and took hold, and the Spirit has been putting that verse in front of you at odd hours for a while now.

Why nobody looked up

I want to give you one thing about that day before I give you anything about God, because it has been sitting wrong in you for forty three years and it can be set right in a paragraph.

Drowning does not look like drowning. It is quiet. The mouth goes under and comes up and there is no breath left over for a shout, because breathing has taken the whole machine. The arms go out to the sides and press down, instinctively, hunting for something solid, and a person cannot make them wave instead, no matter what he intends. From sixty feet away on a warm afternoon it looks like a boy bobbing about in the water. That is what it looks like. That is what it always looks like.

They did not decide you were not worth getting up for. They could not see it. And I am not saying that to hand your day back to you tidied, and I am certainly not saying that people are reliable, because you have fifty two years of evidence about that and I am not going to insult it. I am saying only this: the conclusion you filed on the highway that afternoon was drawn from bad information. A boy took the silence of a beach as a verdict on himself, and it was not a verdict. It was a beach.

Now hear what the word says about who came.

He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.Psalm 18:16

Three verbs and every one of them is His. He sent. He took. He drew. There is nothing in that sentence for the drowning man to do, and I want you to notice what is missing from it, because you have spent your life supplying it. There is no signal. There is no arm raised. There is no correctly executed request. There is a God who came down out of the high place into the water where the man actually was, and got hold of him, and pulled.

You have been taken hold of by Someone who came down into the water Himself. Psalm 18:16 is where that is on record, and the Spirit is what makes an old song about a king's rescue land on a man in a parking garage at six in the morning.

He came before you knew how to ask

Now the harder half, and this is the one your whole policy is built against.

You believe, somewhere underneath everything, that help is a transaction. That it has to be requested properly, and that requesting it costs somebody something, and that you have never been the kind of person for whom that cost gets paid. That is not self pity. It is the honest reading of a nine year old's data, and you have never had a reason to revise it.

Here is the revision, and it is not an opinion. Christ did not come in response to a request. He came first. He came while the human race was face down and not asking, and Scripture is blunt about the timing on purpose, so that no one could ever mistake the rescue for a reward for good signaling. He did not stand on the sand assessing whether your arms were up. He went into the water.

You are the one He came for, and the coming was decided before you ever learned to be quiet about your own trouble. The word settled that at Romans 5:8, that Christ died for us while we were nothing like ready, and His Spirit is what turns that from a doctrine you agree with into a thing that happened to you.

And notice what this does to your policy. Your policy says: do not ask, because asking exposes you and brings nobody. God's answer is not to argue you into asking better. His answer is that the rescue that matters most in your life already happened without a single word from you, at a time when you could not have said one.

It is already done, and it was done in the years you were carrying everything by yourself and telling everyone you were fine. He promised it in John 10:11, where the word says the Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep, and the Spirit does not adjust that promise according to how loudly anybody called.
