He Came For MeGalatians 4:4

The Flight She Paid For Herself

This message is for the woman who has arranged every rescue of her own life and who cannot receive help from anyone without paying for it first

The curb outside arrivals at eleven forty at night is one of the loneliest strips of concrete in America, and Denise is standing on it with her own bag, waiting for a car she booked herself.

She has done this well. That is the first thing to understand about her. The flight was booked inside twenty minutes of the phone call. She found the aisle seat, she found the hotel eleven minutes from the hospital, she printed the parking map, she has a folder with everything in it and a portable charger in the outside pocket because she thought of that too. Her family has been messaging all evening about how amazing she is. She is amazing. She is fifty-two years old and she has been amazing since she was about nine.

Her brother had offered. That is the part I want you to sit with. He said, on the phone, in a voice that meant it: do not book anything, we are all going to split it, just tell me when you can travel. And Denise said thank you so much, and then hung up, and booked the flight herself before the kettle finished, and paid for it out of her own account, and told him afterward it had already been taken care of.

She could not have explained why if you had asked her. It is not pride, exactly. It is something much older and much quieter, and it goes back to a parking lot outside a school in the fall of the year she turned nine, when she sat on a low wall with her coat on her knees while the light went from gold to gray, and the janitor eventually asked her whether she wanted to come inside and wait. Nobody came. There was a reason, and the reason was real, and she has never once held it against anyone. But something got settled in a nine year old that afternoon, and it was this: work out how to get yourself home.

She has been getting herself home ever since. Two states, one divorce, a company that folded, a year that was very hard and that almost nobody knows about, and every single time, she has arranged her own way out. She is the woman everyone calls when their life falls in. She is not the woman anyone comes for, and she has stopped noticing this the way you stop noticing a hum in a house.

The car pulls up. She loads her own bag into the trunk before the driver can get out.

You know that curb. Maybe yours is not an airport. Maybe it is the way you say I am fine before the sentence is finished, or the way you cannot let somebody buy your coffee, or the fact that you have a plan for every emergency in your life including the ones that have not happened. You worked out a long time ago that no one is coming to get you, and you built a competent, admirable, exhausting life on top of that one conclusion. So here is the true thing, right now, before any teaching. You have been come for already, and the coming was not something you arranged. Galatians 4:4 says that when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, and the Spirit has been standing on that curb with you since long before the plane ever landed.

Look at whose verb it is

Let us slow down and read one sentence very carefully, because the whole thing turns on who is doing what in it.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.Galatians 4:4-5

Find the person doing something in that sentence. God sent. That is the verb, and it belongs to Him, and there is not one word in the verse about anybody down here organizing the timing, requesting the visit, or covering the cost of the trip. Nobody on earth booked that flight. Nobody split it. Nobody had a folder.

And notice the timing clause, because that is the part that undoes a woman like Denise. When the fullness of the time had come. It went at His pace. It was not triggered by anybody reaching the end of their strength and finally asking, and it was not held up waiting for a person to become deserving. He moved when He determined to move, and the moving was already finished before any of us knew we were on a curb.

You are somebody God moved toward first, and the timing of it was never yours to manage. It is written in Galatians 4:4 that the sending was His act, and the Spirit keeps that verb in His column instead of quietly handing it back to you.

I know what happens in you when you read that. Something in a competent woman starts looking for the part she is supposed to do. That is not rebellion. That is a nine year old on a wall making sure she never gets left in the cold again, and I am not going to scold her for it. I am going to tell her something better.

The search was never yours to run

Here is what a self-rescuing life does to a person's picture of God, and it is subtle, so watch it.

She does not think of God as unkind. She thinks of Him as busy, and fair, and available to people who ask correctly. She reads about the good shepherd and somewhere underneath she pictures herself as a sheep with a map. She prays like somebody filing a well-prepared request. And when help arrives she immediately begins looking for what she owes, because in her experience nothing has ever come to her that did not have to be settled up afterward.

But go and look at how God tells it Himself.

He says He will search for His sheep and seek them out. He says the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and goes after the one until he finds it. Every single verb of the search sits with Him. The sheep in that story does nothing intelligent whatsoever. It does not signal, does not navigate, does not improve its position. It is simply found, and then it is carried, and the carrying is described as joy and not as a favor being extended.

You have a God who came looking before you knew how to call out, and being found is not a debt. He promised exactly that in Ezekiel 34:11, that He Himself would search for His sheep and seek them out, and the Spirit does not let that verse get turned into one more thing you have to arrange.

Let me say the hard, freeing half of this plainly. This does not mean a person is going to show up at your curb. I am not promising you that and I would not, because the site you are reading and the God I serve do not trade in that kind of promise. What I am telling you is who came, and He came in a body, at a time, into a real world, on purpose, for people who had made no arrangements at all. That happened. It is not pending.

You were sought out on purpose, and the purpose was settled a long time before your birthday. Scripture puts it in Ephesians 1:5, that He chose us beforehand for adoption through Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will, and the Spirit is what turns a legal sentence like that into a warm one at a curb at midnight.

The breakthrough

So here is where this turns.

You do not have to stop being capable. Hear me on that, because a message like this gets misheard as an instruction to fall apart, and I am not asking you to fall apart. Denise is genuinely good at this. The folder is a gift. God gave her that mind and He is not embarrassed by it.

What has to change is the account she thinks she is on.

Right now every good thing that comes to her enters as a loan. Somebody offers, and before her mouth has finished saying thank you her mind has begun working out how to settle it, because a person who was left on a wall at nine learns to keep the books balanced so she is never in anyone's power again. And then that same arithmetic walks into her prayers, and she starts trying to keep her account with God balanced too, which is the one relationship in this universe where the balancing has already been done for her by someone else.

Adoption is not a loan. That is the word Galatians uses two verses later, and it is a legal word about standing, not a feeling. The child in an adoption did not fund it, did not arrange it, was not consulted about the timing, and is not carrying a balance. The whole thing was moved on by somebody else, on purpose, before the child had a say.

It is already done, and there is nothing outstanding on it for you to cover. That is written in Galatians 4:5, that we might receive adoption, and it is the Spirit who makes a sent Son land in you as somebody who came for you personally instead of a doctrine you agree with.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Curbside at midnight, you do not prove that nobody came. God sent His Son in the fullness of time and Galatians 4:4 says the sending was His idea and never mine. I have been come for, and I did not arrange it.
  2. Habit of paying my own way, you do not get to keep me a stranger in my Father's house. I am found, and the finding was done by a Shepherd who went out walking in the dark for me, and in the name of Jesus I put my hands down and let it be done for me.
  3. Father, You came for me while I had no arrangements made at all, and I am standing still long enough to know it. Your word says You sent Your Son in the fullness of time, and Your Spirit is telling me the search is finished. I am saying out loud today that I have been found, and I am not settling up for it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
