He Came For MePhilippians 2:7

The Hospital He Discharged Himself From

This message is for the man who signed himself out after surgery and took a bus home because nobody was coming, and who filed the whole thing under normal

The surgeon cleared him on the Tuesday and Tomas was ready at seven the next morning, sitting on the edge of the bed fully dressed with his shoes on, which the night nurse noticed and did not comment on.

He did everything the sheet said. He watched the video about the drain. He asked the two questions he had written on the back of a receipt. He took the paper bag of medication and the folder of instructions and the number to call if the redness spread. He is not a reckless man. He has never once been a reckless man, and that is worth saying at the start, because what happened next was not carelessness.

There is a line on the discharge form for the name of the adult who will be driving you home, and a second line under it for their phone number. Tomas looked at those two lines for a while. Then he wrote his own name on the first and his own number on the second, and the clerk did not look up, and it went into the system, and that was that.

They wheel you to the door. That is the rule and he liked the young man pushing the chair, who talked the whole way about a car he was fixing. At the automatic doors the young man said, is your ride out front, and Tomas said yes, and the young man said take care of yourself, and went back inside with the chair.

The bus stop is a hundred and ten steps from the doors. He counted them because counting gave him something to do besides notice how it felt to walk that far six hours after an operation. The 14 came in nine minutes. It was full, and a woman with a stroller moved her bag so he could sit, and he thanked her, and he rode forty minutes with the paper bag on his lap and his hand pressed flat against the dressing over the bumps.

He got home. He heated soup. He took the first dose on schedule. And here is the part that matters more than any of it: he did not feel sorry for himself, not for one minute, because somewhere back down the years he had quietly filed all of this under normal. There is no crisis in this story. That is the whole problem with this story. A man who expects nobody stops noticing that nobody came.

You know that form. Maybe yours is a hospital, maybe an airport at two in the morning, maybe a diagnosis you drove yourself to hear and then drove yourself home from with the radio off. And you handled it, and you handle everything, and you have gotten so competent at being uncome for that it has stopped registering as a wound. So hear this before we go anywhere else. You are one of the people God came down for, and He was already on the road before anybody thought to ask who was driving. Philippians 2:7 says He emptied Himself and took the form of a servant, and the Spirit has been putting that in front of you for years while you were busy being fine.

He did not send word, He came

Let me name what this does to a man, because the damage here is quiet and quiet damage is the kind nobody treats.

A man who has been uncome for enough times stops asking. Not out of pride. Out of arithmetic. He runs the numbers, he sees what asking has cost him before, and he decides that self sufficiency is cheaper than another silence on the other end of a phone. And so his whole life becomes a series of well handled emergencies, and everyone around him says how strong he is, and every one of those compliments seals the lid down another inch.

Now here is what the word says about how God handled the same problem from His side.

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.Philippians 2:7

Sit with the mechanics of it. He could have sent word. He could have sent an instruction, a system, an angel, a better set of rules. Every one of those would have been generous and none of them would have cost Him the trip. Instead the text says He emptied Himself and came, in person, the whole way down, into a body that gets tired and bleeds and needs somebody to bring it water.

You have been come for by God Himself, and He did not delegate one step of it. Philippians 2:7 is written in the plainest terms the language has, and the Holy Spirit does not soften a verse like that into a nice idea about God's general goodwill. She lands it as an arrival.

He was on the road before anyone asked

And here is the order, which is the part your competence has never let you see.

He did not come because you asked well. You did not ask. That is the whole story of your life and we may as well say it plainly. He did not come because the situation got bad enough to justify the trip, and He did not come because somebody put your name forward. Romans 5:6 says that in due time Christ died for the ungodly, which means the timing was His, the decision was His, and nothing at all on your end triggered it.

You were come for before you knew how to ask, and no part of the reason was yours to supply. It is written in 1 John 4:19 that we love Him because He first loved us, and His Spirit is what turns a sentence that old into something that happens to a man on a bus.

And I want to be careful with you here. I am not telling you that somebody is about to show up. I do not know your life and I will not hand you a promise God did not make. What I am telling you is what has already happened, which is better than a prediction and harder to take, because a prediction leaves you waiting and this leaves you found.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not depend on your phone ringing.

You have been living as a man who is not come for. That was accurate about a hundred Tuesdays and it was never accurate about the one thing that decides who you are. The decision about whether you are worth the trip was made a long time before that discharge form, by Somebody who did not send an instruction down but came down Himself, and the trip is already taken. It is behind you. It is not pending.

It is already finished, and there is no version of you that God has to be talked into coming for. John 1:14 says the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, which is a way of saying the journey was completed, and the Spirit does not present a finished journey as a possibility.

Filing it under normal kept you upright for years and I am not going to shame the filing. But you can stop now. What was normal was never true.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Form that asked who is driving, you do not measure me. Philippians 2:7 says Christ emptied Himself and took the form of a servant, and He was already on that road before I signed the line. I have been come for and it is done.
  2. Rule that says handle it yourself, you do not run my house now. In the name of Jesus I am one of the ones God came down for, and He came before I had learned how to ask. I am found, and being found was never my work.
  3. Jesus, You did not send word and You did not send somebody else, You came, and I am standing still in front of that today. You call me Yours in Your word and I am done filing this under normal. I have been come for, and I am staying found.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
