The Shop His Father Named for Him

The sign over the bay doors says BRENNEMAN AND SON, and it has said that since Garrett was four years old, which is thirteen years before anybody asked him anything.

He was seventeen when his father took him out to the front lot after supper on a Thursday in June, three days after graduation, and stood him in front of the sign and put a hand on the back of his neck the way he did, and said: "There it is. It's yours." And he meant it as the finest thing he had. It was the finest thing he had. He had built that shop out of a rented bay and a borrowed compressor and thirty years of six-day weeks, and he had put the word SON on it when the boy was still in diapers, because that was the whole point of doing it.

Garrett said thank you. He remembers saying thank you. He does not remember being asked.

He is fifty-one now. He runs it well. He has four bays and a good reputation and two men who have been with him eleven years, and he could tell you the sound of a bad wheel bearing from across a parking lot. His father has been gone six years and Garrett still catches himself doing the thing with the shop rag over the left shoulder because that is how the old man carried it.

And here is what sits on him some mornings, out on the front lot before he rolls the doors up, with the coffee going cold on the fender.

Nobody has ever asked him.

Not once, in thirty-four years. Not his father, obviously, and not out of unkindness; the man could not have imagined the question was open. Not his sister, who says "my brother will look at it" to anybody with a check engine light, and has said it in his hearing at three funerals. Not the town, which calls the shop by his father's name half the time still. Not a customer. Not a soul.

He does not even know what he would say. That is the part he cannot get past. If somebody sat down across from him tomorrow and asked him what he would have done instead, he would have to think about it, and he suspects the honest answer is that he does not have one, because he stopped keeping that file open around nineteen. Something with maps, maybe. He liked the surveyors that came through when they did the bypass. He liked that they were outside all day and that the work was about where things actually are.

It is not a tragedy. He would be the first to tell you that, and he would be right, and that is exactly why it never comes up. A man does not raise a complaint he cannot justify.

You know that sign. Maybe yours is a business, or maybe it is the role you got handed at eleven and never got out of, or a reputation that decides what people call you for, or the standing assumption that when something needs doing you are the one who is available. There are people who talk about you as though you are theirs to spend. You are His alone, and that was settled before anybody put your name on anything. Colossians 3:23 says the work is rendered to the Lord and not to men, and the Spirit has been re-addressing your mornings whether or not you have noticed Him doing it.

The verse was written to people who did not pick their work

I want to hand you one sentence, and before I do, I want you to know exactly who it was written to, because the audience is what gives it its weight.

Paul writes it near the end of a letter, into a list of instructions for a household, and the people he is speaking to at that exact point are bondservants. Not entrepreneurs. Not men weighing offers. People whose work had been decided for them by somebody else entirely and who were not going to be consulted about it tomorrow either. Whatever else is true about their situation, this is: nobody ever asked them.

That is who gets handed this.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.Colossians 3:23

Read what it does not say. It does not say your situation is good. It does not say the arrangement was fair, and Paul is not blessing the arrangement, and anybody who has read the letter to Philemon knows what he thought about a man being owned. It does not tell them to run and it does not tell them to stay put. It does not say feel differently about it either.

What it does is change the address.

The work does not stop and the bay doors still go up at seven. But the sentence takes the whole day's labor, all of it, the honest estimate and the swept floor and the man treated fairly at the counter, and it re-addresses the envelope. It was going to the sign. It was going to a father, and then a memory of a father, and a sister, and a town. Now it goes to the Lord. And the very next line names Him outright: it is the Lord Christ you are serving, Colossians 3:24.

You have been serving a different master than the one on the sign, and you have been doing it since the first morning you rolled those doors up. It is written in Colossians 3:23 exactly to whom the work is rendered, and the Spirit is not reading that address off the front of any building.

Nobody has ever owned you, and that includes the ones who meant well

Now let me get down to what is actually sitting on your chest, because it is not the shop.

It is that a life got decided about you, kindly, by people who loved you, and that the kindness is exactly what makes it impossible to put down. If your father had been cruel you would have had something to push against at twenty-two. He was not cruel. He handed you the best thing he owned. So you have carried a decision you never made, for thirty-four years, and you have not been able to complain about it, and there is no villain in the story to explain the weight.

Here is what Scripture says about who owns you, and it is not complicated.

Whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.Romans 14:8

We are the Lord's. Not the shop's. Not the family name's. Not the town's, not the customers', not the expectations of people who are gone and whose expectations you are still meeting on a Tuesday morning without noticing. And 1 Corinthians 6:19 puts the other half of it just as bluntly: you are not your own. That verse is usually preached as a restriction and it is one of the great releases in the whole book, because if you are not your own then you are also not anybody else's, and every other party who has been quietly writing checks against your life has been doing it on an account they never held.

You were never anybody's to spend, and no one who spent you had the standing to do it. Romans 14:8 says we are the Lord's, living and dying and every ordinary Thursday in between, and the Spirit does not treat that line as poetry about somebody else.

And I want to name the thing about your father clean, because you loved him. He was not stealing from you. He was giving you the only good thing he had a way to give, in the only language he had for it, and a man who paints SON on a sign when the boy is four is a man who was thinking about that boy for a long time. None of what I am telling you requires you to reinterpret him as a thief. This is yours regardless: your standing was never his to assign, and it was never his to take. He promised that in 1 Corinthians 6:19, that you are not your own, and His Spirit lives in the very place where the claim was made.
