The calendar is a free one from the auto parts store on Route 9. It has a covered bridge on it for every month, which is either twelve bridges or the same bridge twelve times, and in eleven years she has never once looked closely enough to find out.
It hangs on the wall by the light switch, and the squares are full.
Not in her handwriting. Her sister writes in blue and presses hard: MOM EYE DR 9:15, YOU'RE DRIVING. Her brother in law writes in pencil and abbreviates everything: hlp w/ move, bring truck? Somebody, at some point, wrote SATURDAY across the top of a Sunday and nobody fixed it and now they all just know what it means.
By the third of any month, most of her weekends have already happened to her.
It is not that they are unkind. That is the part that makes this hard to explain to anybody. They are not unkind at all. They are busy and they are fond of her and they have arrived, over about fifteen years, at an entirely reasonable assumption: she is the one without much on. She is the flexible one. She is the one you can pencil in, and the penciling in is done affectionately, and she has never once given them a reason to think otherwise.
There was a Saturday in June with nothing in the square.
She noticed it on a Tuesday night, standing at the light switch with a dish towel over her shoulder, and something in her chest lifted for a second the way it does at the top of a hill. A whole day. And then she stood there for maybe forty seconds and realized, with something colder than surprise, that she had no idea what she would put in it. Not one idea. She could not name a single thing she wanted to do with a free Saturday, because the machinery for wanting a Saturday had been switched off a long time ago and she had not noticed the day it went.
By Thursday the square said HELP W/ MOVE. She did not mind. That is the truth and it needs saying honestly: she did not mind at all, and she was good at it, and they were grateful.
She just cannot tell anymore where minding ended and being unable to have a preference began.
That is the wall you are standing at. Maybe yours is a shared calendar on a phone and maybe it is a schedule at work and maybe it is nothing written down anywhere, just an understanding, which is the most binding kind. And I am not going to open by telling you to draw a line, because you already know how to draw a line and it is not the line that is missing. You are His, and that was settled about you before anybody picked up a pen in your kitchen. Galatians 5:1 says Christ set you free in order that you would be free, and the Holy Spirit has been holding that in front of you every time you stood at that light switch.
Freedom is not the same thing as an empty square
Read what Paul actually writes, because he does not say what people assume he says.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.Galatians 5:1
He does not say: get your time back. He does not say: assert yourself. He says stand, and the word is doing everything, because standing is what you do in a place that is already yours. He is not telling those people to go and win something. He is telling them not to sit back down in something they were already carried out of.
Which means the question in your kitchen was never really about Saturdays. It was about ownership, and ownership had already been decided, and you have been living as though it were still open for discussion every time somebody writes in blue ink.
You have been made free, and freedom is your condition and not your project. It is written in 1 Corinthians 7:23 that you are not to become the property of people, and the Spirit does not read that to you as a suggestion for later.
Now here is what has gone quiet in you, and it is worth naming precisely, because you have been calling it peacefulness. A preference is a small act of being a self. When you stop having them, the arguments do stop, and something else stops with them. That thing that would not come to you on a Tuesday night in front of an empty square was not laziness and it was not contentment. It was a muscle nobody had asked to use in fifteen years.
You have a self that God gave you and He did not issue it on loan to the people around your table. You have that from Romans 14:8, that whether you live or die you are the Lord's, and the Spirit says it again without attaching a single condition to the end of it.
Whose you are was never up for a vote in that kitchen
Here is the sentence this whole site exists to put in your hands, and I want it plain.
You are not common property. You never were. The claim on you was made first, before there was a family with a moving truck, before there was a calendar on a nail, before there was a reputation for being the flexible one. It was made by God, out of Himself, and nothing about you qualified you for it: not your usefulness, not your good nature, not the fifteen years of Saturdays. He did not claim the version of you that shows up with a truck. He claimed you, and then all of that happened.
You are His alone, and that was settled without a single reference to how you have spent your weekends. His word settled it in Galatians 5:1 and His Spirit is what keeps you standing in it on an ordinary Tuesday with a dish towel on your shoulder.
And notice what this does not require of you.
It does not require a confrontation. It does not require you to stop helping your mother, or to hand back the truck, or to have a difficult conversation with your sister in the driveway. Nobody in that kitchen has to lose anything for you to be who you already are, and nothing in this article is asking you to go and take something from people you love. You are already standing on ground that no conversation in a driveway could give you or take from you. Scripture said it once in John 8:36, that whom the Son sets free is free indeed, and the Spirit has been saying it over your kitchen for a long time.
What changes is not the arrangement. What changes is that from now on, when you do drive to the eye doctor at 9:15, you are giving a Saturday that is yours rather than paying out one that was already spent for you. Same car. Same road. Entirely different woman driving it.
So what actually turns.
Not the calendar. The calendar will look the same on Friday, and the move is still happening, and 9:15 is still 9:15, and I am not going to hand you a technique for taking your weekends back, because a technique would put this back in your hands and it is not in your hands.
What turns is who holds you. You have been treating whose-you-are as the open question that every request quietly answers again, and it has not been open for a long time. It was closed by somebody with the authority to close it, and neither blue ink nor pencil has any standing in the matter.
That is why you can drive on Saturday without resentment and also stand at that wall without going numb. Those two things only fit together in a person who knows who owns her. It is already finished, and it was finished long before anyone learned they could pencil you in. He promised it in His word and He has not withdrawn a syllable, and the Spirit is what carries a finished thing across fifteen years and into an ordinary week.
Declare this over yourself
- Calendar on the kitchen wall, you do not own my Saturdays. You are a free giveaway from an auto parts store with a covered bridge on it, and you were never a deed to a person. Galatians 5:1 says Christ set me free to be free, and He settled that before the first square was filled.
- Fear that I am spendable, you go quiet in me. I am the Lord's, and I give what I give from now on because it is mine to give and not because it was already gone. In the name of Jesus I hand back the job of having no preference.
- Jesus, You set me free and You put Your own name on me where it can be seen. I am standing in that today, and I am driving on Saturday as a free woman. You are the Redeemer who settled whose I am, and I am Yours alone.
