The Ministry She Was Volunteered For

It happened in about nine seconds, eleven years ago, at the end of an annual meeting when everybody wanted to go home.

They were reading the slate. Somebody at a table at the front had typed it up, and the reading was one of those formalities where the room says amen without listening. Trustees, read. Ushers, read. Then: and midweek hospitality, Marlene.

Marlene had not been asked. Not once, not in a hallway, not by text, not by anybody. She looked up when she heard her own name the way you do when somebody calls it in a store, and by the time she had worked out that she had actually heard it right, the reader was two lines further down and the room had already said amen to the whole page.

There was a moment. She could have raised a hand. She thought about it. She could feel her own heartbeat in her ears, and she had about four seconds, and in those four seconds she ran the whole conversation forward in her mind: the pause, the heads turning, the person at the front saying oh, I am so sorry, I thought Deborah had spoken to you, and Deborah's face, and everybody in the fellowship hall afterward being very kind about it in a way she would feel for a year.

So she did not raise her hand. She has done midweek hospitality for eleven years.

Understand what that job actually is. It is not putting out cookies. It is the coffee urn on at four forty five. It is knowing which two people cannot sit near each other and quietly seating the room so nothing happens. It is the woman who comes in wet and shaking every third Wednesday, and Marlene has the tea she likes in her own cupboard at home and brings it in a bag. It is a phone that goes off at nine at night because somebody's ride fell through. She does it well. She does it better than almost anybody would.

And every single Wednesday for eleven years she has arrived carrying something else along with the urn, which is the low, steady dread of the conversation she never had. Because the longer you do a job you never said yes to, the more expensive it becomes to mention that you never said yes to it. Eleven years in, there is no sentence she can imagine saying that does not sound like an accusation of somebody.

She is not a martyr about it. She would tell you she loves those people, and she does. But if you asked her, in the car, with the engine off, whose she is, she would not have an answer, because eleven years ago a room said her name out loud and she has felt owned by that room ever since.

Now let me talk to you, because you have a slate too. Maybe it was a family that decided years ago what you would be for, or a job description that quietly tripled, or an assumption everybody made about your Saturdays that nobody has ever put in words. So hear me, and hear the order of it, because the order is everything. You are His, and that was decided before anybody ever read your name off a page. It is written in Romans 6:22 that you have been made free and have become a servant of God, and the Holy Spirit has been saying that over you at a coffee urn at four forty five on Wednesdays for eleven years.

Freed, and then belonging to God

Paul is writing to people who understood ownership in a way we mostly do not, because a good number of them had been owned. And he does not tell them they now belong to nobody. He tells them who they belong to.

But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.Romans 6:22

Read it in the order he wrote it. Made free. Then become servants to God. Freedom in Scripture is never a vacancy. It is a transfer. You do not get handed back to yourself, because being handed back to yourself is exactly how a person ends up owned by whoever speaks with the most confidence in a room.

That is what happened to you in nine seconds eleven years ago. Nobody seized you. A slate was read, and there was nothing in you that said, wait, I am already spoken for. You have an owner, and He is not in that room and He was never on that page. Scripture says in 1 Corinthians 7:23 that you are not to be the servant of men, and the Spirit has been pressing that verse on you every time your phone goes off at nine at night.

And I want you to notice something merciful in Paul's sentence, because you are already halfway to using it against yourself. He does not say you were free and you gave it away and now you must go get it back. He says you have been made free, past tense, done to you, and that you have become God's. Both of those are things God did. Neither of them is a performance you have been failing at for eleven years. You were made free by an act that had nothing to do with your ability to have a difficult conversation. His word settled it in Galatians 5:1, where Christ has made us free, and His Spirit is not negotiating that down to fit the size of your dread.

Nobody spends what is not theirs

Here is the thing this whole site is built to say, and it belongs right here, in a fellowship hall, with the urn on.

The claim on you was made first. Before the annual meeting. Before the nine seconds. Before you learned to read a room so well that you can seat forty people to prevent an argument nobody else can see coming. Nothing about you qualified you for that claim, which is precisely why nothing anybody has since assumed about you can adjust it.

You have been living as though your standing were assigned by whoever spoke last. It never was. You are His alone, and no meeting has ever had the authority to reassign that. The Holy Spirit does not argue with what is written in Psalm 100:3, that it is God who has made us and we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. He repeats it, plainly, in exactly the hour you are stacking chairs on your own.

Now, this matters more than the job does, so stay with me. What has been costing you is not the work. You like the work. The tea in the bag is not a burden, it is a ministry, and it is possible you were made for it. What has been costing you is that you have been doing it as a person who is owned by the expectation instead of as a person who belongs to God. Same urn. Same Wednesday. Completely different woman.

It is already settled whose you are, and the settling did not wait for you to sort out how you got the job. Scripture says it once in 1 Peter 2:9, that you are a people for God's own possession, and the Spirit says it again over a folding table every single week.
