The Prayer List That Says Others

This message is for the woman who has typed a hundred names onto her church prayer list and finds her own need written at the bottom under the single word others

Wednesday night, half past nine, and Della is the only one left in the building. The heat has clicked off. The copier is doing its long warm-up hum in the corner and the mug at her elbow went cold an hour ago, and she is typing the prayer list because Wednesday night is when the prayer list gets typed.

She has done this for six years. A hundred and four names on the current page, and she can tell you something about nearly every one of them. Bernice, hip surgery, second Tuesday. The Ortega family, and the word she uses for what they are going through is the gentlest one she can find, because she knows they read it. A boy in the youth group whose father moved out in March, listed by his first name only, because she asked his mother first and his mother asked her to keep it small.

She is careful with people's names. That is the whole ministry, if you want to know what it is. She checks the spelling. She never puts a diagnosis on the page that somebody has not agreed to. When a family goes through something and then comes out of it, she moves them up into the thanksgiving section herself so they can see their own name under the word answered.

At the bottom of the page there is a line that has been there for six years. It reads: and others, as the Lord knows.

Her own thing is in that line. It has been in that line since the spring her marriage of twenty-two years ended, and it stayed in that line through the two years after, and it is in that line tonight. She put it there. Nobody buried her. She typed the word others with her own hands, and she typed it because she could not think of a way to type her own name onto a page that a hundred and four people were about to read, and because she has always been the one who does the typing and not the one who gets typed.

She hits print. The copier warms up and pushes the pages out warm, and she squares them on the desk with the heel of her hand the way she always does, and she reads the top of the first page and then, because she is human, she reads the bottom of the last one.

And others, as the Lord knows.

You know that line. Maybe you typed it yourself. Maybe you are the one at the bottom of a group message that says thanks everyone, or the family photograph caption that names four people and then says and the rest, or the volunteer sheet where every slot has a name in it except the one nobody had to ask you about. So hear me tonight, in this office, with the copier still ticking as it cools. You are known by name and He has never once filed you under a heading. It is written in Psalm 147:4 that He counts the number of the stars and calls them all by their names, and the Holy Spirit has been saying your particular name over you at half past nine on a Wednesday in a building with nobody left in it.

God has never once written a general heading

Read what the risen Christ says to a small, tired, overlooked congregation. Not a strategy. Not a program. A stone with something written on it.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.Revelation 2:17

Look at what that name is not. It is not on a list. It is not read out to the room. It is not the sort of name that gets checked against a spreadsheet at the door, because no man knows it except the one who receives it. It is a name that exists between God and one person and nobody else has a copy.

I want you to feel how strange that is, because we have made it sound cozy and it is not cozy, it is startling. God, who runs the stars, who holds the nations like dust on a scale, deals with you at the level of a private name that only you and He can read. Not the category. Not the demographic. Not the row on the sheet. You have a name from God that has never been in anybody else's handwriting. The Holy Spirit does not argue with what is written in Revelation 2:17. He repeats it, quietly, at the exact hour you are most sure that nobody in the building would notice if you left.

And that is not because you are the special exception. It is how He deals with everybody, which is what makes it so hard for people like you to receive. You have spent six years believing that particular attention is a limited resource, so you spend yours on a hundred and four people and take the general heading yourself. God does not have a limited resource. He has a name for each of them and a name for you, and He is not spending anything to do it.

You were never one of the others, and there is no version of that page where He wrote you that way. Psalm 139:16 says His book had your days written in it, and the Spirit has been reading that page over you all evening, in the same room, while you typed everybody else's.

He said it before you typed one line

Here is the part I need you to hear straight, without any softening, because this site has one thing to say and I am not going to bury it under a story.

The claim on you was made first. Before six years of Wednesdays. Before the spring your marriage ended. Before you learned to be careful with other people's names, which is a beautiful thing you learned and it is not the reason. Nothing you have ever typed put your name in His mouth, and nothing you stopped typing took it out.

That matters here more than anywhere, because you are the kind of person who would immediately try to earn this. You would hear that God calls you by name and you would go find a way to deserve it by Friday. Put the pen down. It is already settled and it was settled without a single contribution from you. His word closed the question in Ephesians 1:4, before the foundation of the world, and His Spirit is what makes that read as your own name instead of somebody else's good news.

Now, I am not going to tell you that the room appreciates you more than you think. Maybe it does and maybe it does not, and either way that is not the thing that is going to hold you at half past nine on a Wednesday. There is a real absence in your life. It is not imaginary, it is not self pity, and I will not paper over it with a compliment from a committee. You are held by something that is not the room's opinion of you. It is written in Isaiah 49:16 that He has graven you on the palms of His hands, and the Spirit puts that verse in front of you precisely when the building is empty, because that is when you would believe a smaller thing.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is a small one to look at and enormous to stand in.

Nothing on that printed page changes tonight. The line at the bottom is going to say and others, as the Lord knows, and a hundred and four people are going to read past it in the morning without slowing down. You are not being asked to fix that, confront it, or announce anything to anyone.

What changes is what that line means. Read it again. As the Lord knows. You wrote the truest sentence on the page and you wrote it about yourself without noticing. He knows. Not vaguely, not as part of a group, not the way a person knows there are people in a building. He knows the way Revelation 2:17 says He knows, one name, one stone, one person who receives it.

This is yours right now, tonight, in an empty office, and it is not waiting on anybody's acknowledgment. Scripture says it once in Isaiah 43:1, that He has called you by your name, and the Spirit says it again every single time you sit down at that keyboard.

Do you feel the fire coming up in that? I do. Because for six years the enemy of your soul has been using a formatting decision as evidence, and it was never evidence of anything. It was a line break. You have been the particular concern of God the entire time you thought you were the general heading. He promised in Jeremiah 1:5 that He knew you before He formed you, and His Spirit has been holding that in front of you the way you hold a page up to the light to check it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Word others at the bottom of a list, you do not get to name me. Scripture says the Lord counts the stars and calls every single one of them by name, and in the name of Jesus I am one He calls by mine.
  2. Belief that I am the leftover line, you go now. It is written that there is a new name on a white stone known to the one who receives it, and the Holy Spirit has been saying mine over me in an empty office at half past nine. I am known, and I was known first.
  3. Jesus, You do not file people, and You have never once written me under a heading. You call me by my name, and tonight I am saying my own name out loud and then saying what You call me, in that order, and I am letting both of them stand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
