The Cousin Who Was Told Later

This message is for the man who learns about his own family wedding from a photograph posted online, who is always told afterward and never asked beforehand

Marco puts the kettle on at eleven at night, because eleven is when the apartment finally stops making noise and a man can hear himself think, and while it heats he does the thing he does, which is pick the phone up off the counter and go down the feed with his thumb.

There is a photograph. Forty people on a lawn in the good light, his aunt in the middle with a hand up shading her eyes, his cousin Teresa laughing at something outside the frame, the whole back row of the family standing the way that family always stands. He knows the church behind them. He knows the shoes his uncle has on, because he was there the afternoon they were chosen.

He looks at it a long time. Then he does the arithmetic he has gotten very fast at. Three weeks of planning at the very least, more likely four months. The hall, the flowers, the drive out, the calls back and forth. Twenty of the people in that photograph have his number in their phone.

The kettle clicks off behind him and he does not move.

Here is the part he would want you to understand, because he is not a bitter man and he would hate to be read as one. Nobody left him out on purpose. Nobody sat down and decided anything. He gets the group messages, all of them. He got the one about his uncle's surgery and the one about the new baby, and he answered both inside the hour, and he is the one who loads the folding chairs into the truck every single year without being asked twice. He is on the list.

That is exactly the problem, and it took him most of his thirties to find the word for it. He is on the list and he is not in the conversation. The list is where a man goes when he is told. The conversation is where a man goes when he is asked. He has spent twenty years being told, promptly and warmly and always afterward.

He tips the water out unused. He types congratulations under the photograph with two exclamation points, because the sentence has to look happy or else it looks like an accusation, and he means every letter of it, and it costs him something to write, and all of that is true at once.

Then he stands in his own kitchen with the stove light on and thinks the thought he has quit saying out loud: that he could disappear from the middle of this family and it would be noticed at roughly the speed of the next holiday.

You know that counter. You know the two exclamation points. Maybe yours is a photograph, maybe a card that came around the office with forty signatures on it and yours added at the end by somebody being kind, maybe just the low steady hum of being informed about a life you were supposed to be standing inside of. And I am not going to tell you that they meant well, because you already know they did, and knowing it has never once helped at eleven at night. I am going to tell you something else entirely. You are known by name by the One who counts out the stars, and He was using your name long before anybody thought to leave it off anything. Psalm 147:4 says He numbers them and calls them all by their names, and the Spirit has been saying yours over that stove light for a very long time.

He counts the thing nobody else bothers to count

Let me name what the list does to a man, because nobody has ever named it for you and it has been running your evenings for years.

Being on the list teaches you that you are a quantity. Useful, reliable, included in the distribution, and fundamentally interchangeable with whoever else could have loaded the chairs. And a man who learns that stops offering the parts of himself that only he has. He gets efficient. He answers within the hour, he congratulates in public, and he keeps the real thing folded up in a drawer where nobody is going to be burdened by it. That is not bitterness. That is management. And it is exhausting in a way that never shows up on anybody's face but yours.

Now here is what the word says about how God handles the things there are too many of to bother naming.

He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.Psalm 147:4

Look at the two halves of that sentence, because the whole message is in the seam between them. Counting is what you do to a quantity. Naming is what you do to a person. And God does both in a single breath, and He does the naming to the one category in all creation that is most numerous, most anonymous and most interchangeable to every eye but His. There are a hundred billion of them in one galaxy and not one of them is on a distribution list.

You have a name in the mouth of God, and it is not the name a group message hands out. Scripture says it once in Psalm 147:4 and the Spirit says it again every night you stand at that counter with the water going cold.

The claim was made before the list existed

And I want to be careful with you here, because there is a cheap version of this message and you deserve better than it.

The cheap version says the people around you appreciate you more than you know. I am not going to say that to you. I do not know your family and I am not going to paper over a real absence with a compliment nobody actually made. Something is genuinely missing from your life, the arithmetic was accurate, and I will not talk anybody out of their own arithmetic.

What I will do is tell you where your name is, and it is not on the list you have been checking.

God named you before there was any list to be on or off. Not after He looked you over. Not once you had loaded enough chairs. First. Nothing about you produced that naming, which is the whole scandal of it, because if anything about you had produced it then losing it would only ever be one bad year away.

You were named before any list existed, and there is nothing in you that put you on His. You have that on the authority of Isaiah 43:1, where God says He has called you by your name and that you are His, and His Spirit is not offering a second opinion on it.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not require anybody to call you.

All those nights at the counter were spent waiting to get moved from the list into the conversation, and I am telling you that the conversation already had you in it, in a room you were never invited into and could not have gotten into if you had been. God has been speaking your name in it. Not your usefulness. Not the chairs. Your name, the one He picked, said out loud in the only place where saying it settles anything.

It is already settled, and there is not a version of you that God has to be reminded about. Exodus 33:17 has Him saying He knows you by name, flat out, with no qualifier attached, and the Spirit does not let a sentence like that stay locked in the past tense.

The absence in your family is still an absence. I am not making it into something else. But the man standing in that kitchen is not an unnamed man, and he never once was.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Photograph on that counter, you do not tell me who I am. Psalm 147:4 says He counts the stars and calls them all by their names, and He was using mine before anyone thought to leave it off. I am named by God and the naming is done.
  2. Voice that says I am optional, you have no name to give me. In the name of Jesus I answer to the name God uses and to no other, and He gave it before I had done one useful thing. I am known, and being known is not a thing I earned.
  3. Father, You call the stars out one by one and You call me by my name, and I am answering You tonight. You have never once needed a photograph to find me, and You are not being reminded of me now. I am Yours, and I go to sleep as one of Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
