It is two seventeen in the morning and the only light in the apartment is the one in her hand.
She has been awake since a quarter past midnight because a thread called Sunday Crew went off at 12:11 and she is the one who answers. Somebody's sister is in trouble. Somebody's lease fell through. She has typed and deleted and retyped a paragraph four times to get the kindness exactly right, because she knows how a sentence lands at one in the morning on a person who is already frightened. She got it right. She always gets it right.
She sends it. She watches the three dots appear and disappear twice.
A thumbs up comes back.
She lies there in the blue light with the phone tipped on her chest and she does something she has not done in a long time. She scrolls up. Not through one thread. Through all fourteen of them, the way you might walk through a house at night checking windows. Sunday Crew. Book Club, Do Not Add Anyone. Aunt Deb Plus Cousins. Work Vent. The one from a trip four years ago that nobody has left and nobody uses. She scrolls and she reads and somewhere around the eleventh thread she understands what she is actually looking for.
Her name.
Not tagged. Not thanked. Just said. Somebody typing the four letters of her name because they wanted to say it to her, at the front of a sentence, the way you say a name when you are actually talking to one person and not to a room.
There is a great deal of "thanks so much!!" There is a great deal of "you're the best." There is an "@everyone." There is, three months back, one person who asked how she was doing and then answered their own question before she could reply.
She is the one they tell things to. She is not the one they call first. She has known that for years the way you know a chipped tile in a hallway, walking past it without looking. Tonight she looked.
She puts the phone face down, which she never does, and lies in a dark that is suddenly much darker. And the thought that comes is not dramatic. It is very small and very old and it has a shape she recognizes from being about nine years old. If I stopped answering, how long before anybody noticed it was me who stopped.
You know that room. You may not have fourteen threads, but you know the arithmetic of being included and not being wanted, and you know the particular loneliness of being needed at two in the morning by people who could not tell you what you are afraid of. So here is the first thing, and it is not a reassurance about your friends, because a reassurance about your friends is not what is missing. You have been counted, one by one, down to a number nobody has ever bothered to keep. Luke 12:7 says the hairs of your head are all numbered, and the Holy Spirit has been saying that over you in this exact hour, while the screen was the only light in the room.
God has never once addressed a group
Read what Jesus actually says, and notice how absurdly small it is.
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.Luke 12:7
He is talking to a crowd so large they were stepping on each other. He could have said something about the crowd. Instead He goes to the smallest, least useful, least impressive fact about a single human head and He says it is counted. Not weighed. Not evaluated. Counted, which is what you do to things you intend to keep track of one at a time.
That is the whole difference between the thread and the throne. A thread scales. It handles fourteen people and four hundred with the same effort, which is exactly why it can never make you feel known: the message that reaches you is the same message that reached everyone, and some part of you has always been able to tell. You have a kind of attention on you that does not get thinner when it is shared. It is written in Psalm 147:4 that He counts the stars and calls every one of them by name, and the Spirit refuses to let that stay a nice fact about astronomy while you lie there feeling like a group notification.
She wanted somebody to type her name. That instinct is not vanity and it is not weakness. It is the single most accurate hunger she has, because a name is the sound of being addressed as one and not as some. You were made to be addressed by name, and you were addressed that way before you could answer to it. Isaiah 43:1 has God saying He has called you by your name, and the Spirit is not using that line as a metaphor tonight.
He did not learn your name from the thread
Here is the part that changes the floor under you.
God did not find out about you the way people find out about you. Nobody introduced you. No one vouched for you, listed your strengths, explained that you were reliable and good in a crisis and worth adding. He did not learn your name from your usefulness, which means your usefulness is not what is holding your place, which means the thing you have quietly feared for years, that they keep you because you answer at two in the morning, has never once been true of Him.
The claim came first. Before there was a you to assess, there was a decision about you, and nothing about you was consulted. That is not a compliment about your character. It is a fact about His. Your name is not in His mouth because you earned a place in the room. It was in His mouth before there was a room. You are known by name on a basis that has nothing to do with what you have been carrying for everybody. What is written in John 10:3 is that the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out, and the Spirit has never once needed to be reminded of yours.
And notice what this does not do. It does not tell you the absence is imaginary. It is not imaginary. Nobody called you first, and that is a real thing that really happened, and pretending otherwise would be one more person handling you instead of knowing you. You have a settled place that no human absence created and no human arrival can improve. Scripture put it in Isaiah 49:16, that He engraved you on the palms of His hands, and the Spirit brings that line up precisely when the room goes quiet.
So what moves tonight.
Not the threads. They will be there in the morning and the thumbs up will still be a thumbs up, and I am not going to hand you a technique for making people call you first. That would be a strategy laid on top of an ache, and you have run enough strategies.
What moves is who is counting. You have been living as though the tally that decides your standing is kept on that screen, and it never was. It is kept somewhere else, by someone who started counting before you had hair on your head to number. That tally is complete. It is not being updated based on tonight's performance in Sunday Crew.
It is already finished, and it was finished long before you got good at being needed. He promised it in His word and He has never taken a word of it back, and the Spirit is the one keeping that promise loud in a house where everything else has gone quiet.
Declare this over yourself
- Thumbs up at two in the morning, you do not tell me what I am worth. You are one character on a screen and you were never a verdict on a person. God counts what nobody counts, and Luke 12:7 says so before I ever picked up the phone.
- Old fear that I am furniture, you go quiet. I am known by name by the God who numbers stars, and that was decided before anyone found me useful. In the name of Jesus I put down the job of being needed enough to keep.
- Father, You called me by my name while the room was dark and the screen was the only light. I am answering to that name today, and I am saying it out loud before I say anything to anybody else. You are the God who counts what nobody else counts, and I am counted.
