Third Alto, Back Row

The third step of those risers gives a little when you stand on it, and Charlene has stood on it for nineteen years. Third alto, back row, second in from the end, right by the radiator that ticks all the way through the opening hymn. She knows that loft the way you know your own kitchen in the dark.

She is the one who gets there at six forty to unstack the folders. She is the one with the spare black cardigan in her tote bag for whoever forgot, and the cough drops, and the safety pins, and the little travel bottle of hair spray that has rescued four Easters. When the risers were rebuilt she wrote every single person's name on masking tape and stuck it to the back of their chair so nobody would stand in the wrong place.

Her own strip of tape came off two winters ago. Nobody replaced it.

Every spring there is a guest soloist. Every spring the director comes up the steps with the clipboard and that apologetic tilt of the head, and says, Charlene, honey, could you shift down one. And Charlene shifts down one. She has shifted down one so many times that she stopped counting the shifting and started counting the guests instead. Seven. Eight, if you count the young man who canceled.

She never said no. That is the part she would want you to know first, and she would want you to know it before anything else, because she is not bitter and she would hate for you to think she was. She never once said no, and she never once made a face about it, and she carried the guest's water bottle up the steps and showed her where the sheet music lives and where the light over the second row is bad. Then she went back to third alto, back row, and sang the line that is written to hold the whole sound up from underneath. Nobody can pick that line out. Take it away and the whole thing falls in.

Somewhere in those nineteen years she came to a quiet arrangement with herself. She decided that being useful in a crowd is as close as a woman like her gets to being wanted. She is not angry about it. She would tell you she is grateful, and she would mean it. But the arrangement is in there, and it is the reason she reaches for the folders before anybody asks, and it is the reason her name has never once gone on the sign-up sheet taped to the piano.

You know that arrangement, do you not. Maybe it is not a choir loft. Maybe it is a break room, or a nursery schedule, or a family that only calls you when something needs carrying. You made the same deal in your own words, on your own quiet afternoon, and you have kept your side of it faithfully ever since. So hear me, because I did not come up these steps to admire your work ethic. You are wanted before you are useful, and that order was set long before you were helpful to anybody. Paul put it in 2 Timothy 1:9, that God called us not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace, given in Christ Jesus before the world began, and the Holy Spirit has been saying that over you in a back row where nobody ever handed you a microphone.

He handed out the calling before He handed out the parts

Paul wrote that sentence from a cell, near the end of everything, to a young man who was frightened and thinking about quitting. He did not open with strategy. He opened with who did the calling, and when.

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.2 Timothy 1:9

Now read the order in that verse slowly, because the order is the entire gift. Saved. Called. Then a clause that slams the door on every other explanation: not according to our works. Then a clause that tells you when the decision got made: before the world began.

Before the risers. Before the folders. Before the first time anybody in that building found out you were reliable.

We usually hear not according to our works and file it under salvation, as though it were only ever about sin. It is wider than that. It is about the record. It is about the whole long list of things you have done to make yourself difficult to leave out, and Paul walks straight past that list without looking at it, because the calling was not issued on the strength of it. You have a holy calling that was never handed out on the merits of your usefulness. That is what 2 Timothy 1:9 says in so many words, and the Holy Spirit did not set that verse in front of you this morning so you could admire the doctrine in it.

Somebody needs to say the harder half of that out loud. If the calling was not issued because you are useful, then it cannot be withdrawn when you stop being useful. That is not comfort. That is architecture. The day your knees will not take the risers anymore, the day a younger alto reads better than you do, the day the folders get put on a cart and nobody needs them unstacked, the calling is exactly where it was, because it was never sitting on any of those things in the first place.

You were called before there was a world to be useful in, and that is not a figure of speech. It is written that way in 2 Timothy 1:9, in Paul's own wording and not in a preacher's flourish, and His Spirit keeps that page open in front of you like a hand keeping the wind off it.

Nothing you carried up those steps bought this

Here is the difference that has been costing you nineteen years, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.

Being needed is a transaction, and a transaction can be ended by whoever is on the other side of it. That is why you keep the cough drops in the bag. Some part of you knows the arrangement holds only as long as your side of it holds, so you keep making yourself necessary, quietly, tirelessly, and every spring the clipboard comes up the steps and confirms your worst suspicion in a kind voice.

Being wanted is not a transaction at all. Being wanted is a decision made by somebody else and held by somebody else, and it does not consult you about your qualifications. This is the thing the whole message stands on, so I am going to say it plainly and not decorate it: the claim on your life was made first. It was made before you had one single thing to recommend you. Nothing about you cast the deciding vote, and nothing about you can call for a recount.

It is already settled that God said mine over you first, and you contributed nothing to the decision. Ephesians 1:4 places that choosing before the foundation of the world, and His Spirit is not offering you a second opinion on it.

That is not a demotion of your work. Your work is real, and the sound of that choir genuinely does fall in without you. But your work is the response and it has never once been the reason. You have been His the entire nineteen years, and not one of those years was an audition. It is written in 1 John 4:19 that we love Him because He first loved us, and the Spirit says that first over you every time you climb those steps, whether or not one person up there says anything at all.
