The fellowship hall smells like starch and old hymnals and coffee that has been on the burner since six. Four folding tables pushed into a square, the propane heater ticking in the corner, the side door propped with a cinder block because it is April in the mountains and the air coming through is worth the draft.
They are piecing a quilt for the Sutton family, whose place burned in February. Ten women, and everybody knows her job. Ida runs the pattern. Delores cuts. The two Ferris girls press. And Verna sorts.
Verna has sorted for this group thirty-one years. What that means, in practice, is that when the pattern is set and the squares are chosen and the good ones are stacked at Ida's elbow, Verna gathers up what is left on the table and puts it in the pillowcase she keeps in the cabinet under the sink. Nobody picked them. Not because they are bad cloth. The green is half a shade off. The little sprigged print runs crooked to the grain. There is a piece of blue chambray cut from the back of a work shirt that would have been perfect if it were two inches wider.
Tonight the hall is empty, the percolator is unplugged, and Verna is standing at the sink with the pillowcase open in her hands. She has stopped moving.
She is fifty-nine. She was the fifth of six. She was the one who stayed the year her mother got sick, while the others called on Sundays and sent flowers to the funeral home, and nobody was unkind about any of it, and that is somehow the part that sits heaviest. She is the one they call at nine at night when a ride to the hospital is needed. She is the one they call when somebody drops out. Two summers back her name was left off the reunion shirts, an honest mistake, and she said so herself, twice, out loud, and then sat in her car in the driveway for eleven minutes before she went in the house.
She is good cloth. She is half a shade off. She has been in that pillowcase her whole life.
You know that pillowcase. Maybe yours is a group text you get added to on the second round, or a list read out at work with your name in the place where they say and others, or a hallway full of people who are glad to see you and not one who has ever gone looking for you. You have been useful. You have been available. You have been thanked. Not one of those is the same as being wanted, and somewhere along the way you did the arithmetic and decided that a person left over this often was probably never top cloth to begin with. So hear this before anything else in the room gets a word in. You are the one He picked on purpose, and He did the picking long before you ever came near that table. John 15:16 says it in plain daylight, that you did not choose Him and He chose you, and the Holy Spirit has been setting that sentence down in front of you for years while you kept putting it back in the drawer.
The pattern was drawn before the cloth was cut
I am going to be plain with you, because you are tired of being handled.
There is an order to how a quilt gets made and everybody in that hall knows it. You lay out the cloth. You look at what you have. You choose the squares that suit the pattern you already drew. The cloth does not audition. It does not improve itself on the table while it waits. The choosing happens because of what is in the mind of the one who drew the pattern, and the cloth finds out afterward.
That is the order Jesus gives, and He gives it on purpose, to men who had spent three years quietly assuming they had done the picking.
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.John 15:16
Read the first six words again. He is not correcting a small error in the bookkeeping. He is telling them that the whole direction of the thing runs the opposite way from how it felt from the inside. They followed. They left boats and books and family tables. They looked, to themselves, exactly like men who had made a decision. And He says: no. The pattern was drawn first, and you were chosen into it.
You have a place in a pattern that was drawn before the cloth was ever cut, and the drawing is finished. That is not my encouragement to you. It is written in John 15:16 and it will still be written there tomorrow morning when you are tired and unimpressed with yourself, and the Spirit does not read it to you as a general announcement about people in general. He reads it out in your own name.
Nothing on that square recommended it
Now the harder half, and I will not soften it, because softening it is what has kept you at the sink.
You have been waiting your whole life to find out what it was about you that got you picked, so you could keep doing that thing and stay picked. That is the wrong question and it has cost you thirty years. There was nothing. Not one thing on the square recommended it. The green was still half a shade off when He reached for it, and the print was still crooked to the grain, and He knew both before He drew the pattern.
This is the plain scandal running through the whole Bible, and people keep trying to turn it into a compliment. Israel is told flatly that they were not chosen for being impressive or numerous, and the reason given is a circle with no door in it: He set His love on them because He loved them. Deuteronomy 7:7 and 8. That is not a reason anybody can qualify for, and it is not a reason anybody can lose. Later Paul reaches back into Hosea and says the ones who were not a people are called my people, and the one not beloved is called beloved. The name changes because of the One doing the naming. The cloth never improved.
Hear what that protects you from. If nothing about you made the case, then nothing about you can unmake it. The half shade off cannot disqualify you from what it never qualified you for in the first place.
You were claimed with nothing about you making the argument, and that is the only kind of claim that holds in a hard year. His word settled it in Ephesians 1:4, before the world was founded and long before you had any record to show anyone. His Spirit is what makes you hear that in your own name rather than as somebody else's good news.
Here is where I want you to stop nodding and take something home.
The reason being picked by people never settled you is that people pick for a pattern, and the pattern gets redrawn. Ida draws a new one every spring. That is not cruelty, it is just what people do, and you have organized your whole life around staying useful enough to survive the next redraw. It is honest work and it is exhausting and it has never once told you whose you are.
God does not pick that way. He does not choose you into a pattern. He chose you, and then He drew the pattern around you, and the choosing came first and the standing came with it. First Peter 2:9 calls you a chosen people and His own possession, and it puts the whole thing in the past tense on purpose, because the deciding is over.
So put the arithmetic down on the counter. You are not waiting to hear whether you made it in. The hearing already happened, over your head, before your file was ever opened.
It is already settled, and it was settled without your vote and without your record. You have that on the authority of First Peter 2:9, and the Spirit is not offering a second opinion on it, He repeats the verdict until you can say it back without flinching.
And understand what this is not. It is not a consolation for the reunion shirt, or the group text, or the thirty-one years of gathering up what other people left. It does not make up for anything and it was never offered as a trade. It is the older and truer thing that was standing underneath all of it the whole time, and it does not need one human being to have been wrong in order to be true.
Declare this over yourself
Say these once, out loud, in your own kitchen. You are not talking yourself into anything here: the choosing is already done and the standing is yours in Christ, so this is agreement, not effort. What comes of the saying is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and on His own ground, which is exactly why the weight of it never lands back on you.
- Pillowcase of leftover squares, you do not get to say what I am worth. Scripture says in John 15:16 that I did not do the choosing, the Lord did, and He did it before I was ever laid out on that table. I am in the pattern.
- Second best, you are finished in this house and I am done answering to you. The choosing was made over my head by the One who calls people by name, and in the name of Jesus I put that old verdict down on the counter and walk away from it.
- Father, You chose me and You said so first, and I take Your word for it over thirty-one years of gathering up what nobody picked. Your Spirit says it again in an empty hall when the coffee is off, and tonight I say it back out loud: I am the Lord's.
