The Name Called Across the Yard

There is a masonry supply yard on the north edge of town where the gravel is white with block dust and the forklift has been sounding its backup alarm since before some of the men working there were born, and when the office wants somebody in that yard they open the window and holler.

They holler "Wrongway."

Alvin has been Wrongway for twenty years. It started with a load of split face block that went to Corbin when it was supposed to go to Corbett, which cost the company most of a day and cost Alvin nothing but a look, and by the end of that week it was his name. It was funny. It was genuinely funny at the time, and he laughed at it too, because a man who cannot laugh at himself does not last long in a yard.

The trouble is what twenty years does to a joke.

It stopped being a story and became a word. The men who were there when it happened have mostly retired. The kid on the forklift is twenty-three and calls him Wrongway forty times a shift and has no idea there was ever a load of block, or a Corbin, or a Corbett. He thinks it is just what the man is called. The dispatcher writes it on the board. It is on the coffee mug somebody gave him one Christmas. There was a form last spring, an actual company form with an actual line on it, and Alvin caught himself starting to write the W.

And here is what he cannot get to the bottom of, on the drive home, on the nights it sits on him: he cannot remember agreeing to it.

There was never a moment. Nobody came to him and asked. There was no day when he weighed it up and decided that from here on out this would be his name and the other one, the one his mother chose and said over him and used when she was pleased with him, would go in a drawer. It just happened, one holler at a time, over twenty years, the way water takes a curb.

He is fifty-six. He is one of the best men in that yard and everyone knows it, which is a separate fact and does not fix anything. Sometimes a customer will ask his name and there is this half second, a real gap, where he has to decide which one to say.

You know that half second. Maybe yours is not hollered across a yard; maybe it was a word somebody in your family used about you at eleven and it stuck, or a thing you were called at school that you can still hear in a certain tone of voice, or a description of yourself you have repeated so many times you have stopped checking whether it is true. You have a name given to you by God, and it was given long before anybody in that yard opened a window. Judges 6:12 has that greeting landing on a man hiding in a winepress, and the Spirit has been saying that word over you in a place where nobody else was going to.

He said it in the winepress, before there was one thing to show for it

There is a man in the Book of Judges who would understand the half second exactly.

His name is Gideon, and when we meet him he is threshing wheat in a winepress. You have to know what that means to feel it. Wheat is threshed on a high open floor where the wind can carry the chaff away; that is the whole point, and it takes air and space. A winepress is a pit. It is a hole cut down in the rock for treading grapes. Threshing wheat in one is like working an engine in a closet. He is doing it down in the pit because the Midianites take everything they see, and a man in a hole is a man who has decided that the best he can do today is not be noticed.

That is the address. That is where the sentence gets delivered.

And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.Judges 6:12

Read it in the room it was said in. There is no army. There is no victory. There is nothing on the record, nothing in the yard, nothing anybody in that town would have signed off on. There is a frightened man in a pit with a bushel of wheat, and heaven walks up and calls him a mighty man of valor to his face.

And Gideon does what you would do. He argues. He says, in essence, you have got the wrong man and the wrong family and the wrong house, I am the least in my father's house and my clan is the weakest. He has a whole inventory ready, because a man who has been small a long time keeps the inventory close.

Notice that the greeting is not withdrawn. Not softened, not corrected, not re-examined in light of the new information. The name was not a prediction of how the campaign would go. It was a word out of God's mouth about who the man was, said first, and the entire rest of the chapter is Gideon slowly catching up to a sentence that was already true when it was spoken.

You were named by God before there was a single piece of evidence in your favor, and the naming was never conditional on the evidence. It is written in Judges 6:12 that the name came before the battle and not after it, and the Spirit is not reading that timeline backward for you.

Nobody in that yard has naming rights

Here is the thing about names that a working man understands faster than a scholar does. A name is a claim of ownership. Whoever names a thing is asserting something about where it belongs.

That is why it matters so much in Scripture. God names the light and the dark on the first page. Adam names the animals because they are given into his charge. God changes Abram to Abraham and Jacob to Israel at the exact hinge of what He is doing with them. And the promise runs all the way through to the end: you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give, Isaiah 62:2. The mouth of the Lord. Not the mouth of the office window. Not the mouth of the yard.

Now hear me carefully, because this is where a man gets it wrong in the other direction. Nobody in that yard is your enemy. The kid on the forklift is not malicious; he is twenty-three and he learned a word on his first day. The men who started it were laughing with you and not at you and most of them are gone now anyway. There is no villain in this and there is nothing here that needs settling with anybody.

What there is, is a question of authority. Those men had no standing to name you. Not because they were cruel, but because they were never given the office. You are named out of the mouth of the Lord, and no window in any yard was ever issued the right to overrule it. Isaiah 62:2 says the mouth of the Lord does the naming, and the Spirit has been spelling that out to you slowly, one holler at a time, for years.

And there is one more, and it is the one I would want if it were me. Revelation 2:17 promises a white stone with a new name written on it, and the text says no one knows that name except the one who receives it. Think about that. A name that cannot be shortened by a crew, cannot go on a coffee mug, cannot be learned secondhand by a kid who was not there. This is yours already and it is not on the board in the dispatch office. He promised it in Revelation 2:17, and the Spirit is not putting that one up for a vote in a break room.
