The Uniform She Ironed Twice

Yvette gets up at four twenty so that nobody will ever have anything to say.

The alarm is set for four twenty because the iron takes eleven minutes to come up to heat and the shift starts at six and the bus is at five thirty-five, and inside that math there has to be room to do the uniform twice. Not once. Twice. The first pass gets the creases out. The second pass is the one that matters, because the second pass is where she checks the collar under the lamp, and turns the sleeve, and looks at the seam where the fabric puckers if you rush it, and presses it again until there is nothing there for anyone to notice.

Nobody has ever asked her to do this. That is the part she would not be able to explain if you asked her. There is no supervisor at the hospital laundry who checks collars. Nobody at that facility has said one critical word to Yvette in nine years. She irons it twice anyway, at four thirty in the morning, in a small apartment with the window going from black to gray behind her, because of a rule she absorbed a long time before she had words for it, which is this: a person is allowed into a room only when there is nothing about her left to correct. Not before.

She learned it young. There was a woman in her childhood who looked at her the way you look at a coat on a hanger, always finding the loose thread. Yvette does not talk about her. She is not bitter and she does not tell the story at parties and she would tell you, honestly and without any edge in her voice, that she was raised fine. She just also happens to be a forty-six year old woman who cannot walk into a room until she is beyond comment.

Here is what it costs her now, and this is the reason I am telling you about her at all.

She cannot pray.

She wants to. She sits on the edge of the bed at five past five with the uniform hanging on the closet door, and she gets about four words in, and then something in her stands up and says: not like this. Not with the thing you said to your sister on Thursday still sitting there. Not with the way you have been about the neighbor. Come back when you have straightened it out. And she gets up and she checks the collar one more time under the lamp, because the collar she can fix.

You know that lamp. Maybe yours is not an iron. Maybe it is the message you draft four times, or the apology you have been rehearsing since spring, or the way you tidy the apartment before the one person comes over who would not care. And it has followed you into prayer, so that you keep arriving at God the way you arrive everywhere else, hoping to have gotten there early enough to fix the seam first. So let me say the true thing right at the front of this, before any teaching, while the iron is still hot. You are loved already, and the loving did not wait for the second pass. It is written in Zephaniah 3:17 that the Lord your God is in your midst and rejoices over you with gladness, and the Spirit has been holding that sentence open over you since before the alarm went off this morning.

The second pass is not about the collar

Let us go slowly here, because this is tender ground and I am not going to rush you across it.

The woman who irons twice is not vain. That is the first thing people get wrong about her. She is not trying to be admired; she is trying to be unfindable. There is a difference and it is the whole difference. Admiration is something you reach for. Being beyond comment is something you hide behind. The second pass of the iron is not about the collar at all. It is about a door she is trying to close, one seam at a time, so that nothing can get through it and reach her the way it reached her when she was small.

And it half works. That is the cruel part. It half works, for a while, in rooms full of people who were never going to say anything anyway.

But it does not work on God, and it was never designed to, and here is where the whole arrangement breaks down. Because you cannot arrive early to God. There is no getting there before Him. He was already in the room. He was in the room while the iron was heating and while the uniform was crumpled in the basket and while she said the thing to her sister on Thursday, and the verse that tells us so does not say He was tolerating it.

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.Zephaniah 3:17

Read what He is doing in the middle of that. Not inspecting. Not waiting outside until she is ready. Rejoicing. Singing, at volume, over a people who had just spent three chapters being corrected. You have a God who is glad over you before you are presentable, and His gladness is not a grade He is holding back. Zephaniah 3:17 says it in the present tense and the Spirit is not waiting for you to be beyond comment before saying it again.

What is settled, and what is still growing

Now I have to be careful, and I want you to hear me carefully too, because this is where people take a message like this and break it in half.

I am not telling you that nothing about you needs to change. Of course things do. Things need to change in me. The word to your sister on Thursday was real and you know it was, and God is not squinting at it and calling it fine. He is a Father and He raises daughters, and being raised involves being corrected, and correction from Him is one of the kindest experiences a human being can have.

What I am telling you is that those are two different documents, and you have been reading them as one.

The claim is settled. The growing is welcome. They are not on the same page and they never were. Nothing you are still working on is holding the claim open for review. He did not say mine and then add a probation period. Scripture puts the order beyond argument in 1 John 4:19: we love because He first loved us. You were loved first, in the order God actually did it, and every change since has been a response and not a payment. The Spirit does not soften that sentence when it comes to you. The Spirit repeats it.

Do you feel the weight coming off that? The iron can stay in the closet and the growing can still happen. In fact the growing happens far better this way, because a daughter who knows she is claimed can look straight at the thing she said on Thursday without her whole identity going down with it. You are safe enough to be honest about yourself now, and that safety is not something you built. His word settled it in Romans 8:1, and it is the Spirit who keeps that verse in the present tense over you at five past five in the morning.
